Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: In response to a recent question, you had suggested an appropriate portfolio weighting for the tech sector would be 20-30%. Strictly speaking, I hold about 19% tech ( LMN 4.5%, MSFT 5.55%, NVDA 6.5% and UBER 2%). That said, I also hold an additional 17.6% of what I would consider 'tech-like' stocks: GOOG 5%, AMZN 6.75%, and VRT 5.85%. Would you suggest I am overweight, underweight or nicely balanced in terms of my tech holdings? By way of context, I would describe my investment style as risk-managed growth. Thank you.

Q: Hi Team. With interest rates on the decline I'm thinking REIT's will become more popular. Also concerned with Telus's struggles so thinking of selling Telus and purchasing equal amounts of Dream Industrial REIT and Granite REIT with the sale proceeds. Would you have any concerns with this?

Q: Your thoughts and analysis of these 2 new listed etfs? I realize their size is minimal, but they apparently pay a healthy dividend. Do you see investor interest accelerating? Thanx.

Q: I originally submitted this question back on Sept 17 but never received a response so I'll try again. I was wondering if you could provide some investment ideas/suggestions for ongoing contributions to a FHSA, as contribution room becomes available each year. Looking for "reasonable" growth without "excessive" risk over the 15 years of the plan. I am thinking of investing 50% of the yearly $8000 allowable contribution to a CAD-denominated S&P500 ETF and wondered which one you would suggest? Or, would you recommend something else? What is your opinion of XQLT - the iShares MSCI USA Quality Factor Index ETF as compared to an S&P500 ETF? For the other 50% of the yearly contributions I was wondering which two TSX stocks and which two CDR's you would suggest for annual contributions until the $40k plan maximum is achieved in 5 years? Thanks.

Q: I thought I sent you a question about HWX a few days ago, but I've received no reply. So, I'll try again

How is it possible (or fair) that HWX is having a private placement at 22 cents per share, when the stock is over $^. Isn't that very dilutive for present shareholders? See part of NR below

Q: Hi,

I trust that you are well.

A couple of questions....

1) The first one has to do with investor psychology. I've held CIX for about 2 years. I got in at around $20, and it has gone as low as $12, and is now at $17.50. My instinct is to sell and be grateful that I have minimized my loss. Thoughts?

2) "CI Financial announces substantial issuer bid price increase"... it has gone from $17.50 to $18.25. Seems bullish?

3) Would you be able to suggest a ball park figure as a sell price...from a value investing point of view.

Cheers,
David

Q: I'm building US content into my portfolio, and am looking for medium risk ETFs. Do you have an estimated target and a recommendation for these two ETFs? I'd like both NASDAQ and S&P 500 exposures. Is the content of ZUE and XQQ content too overlapping for the two exposures?

Q: I was happy to learn recently that TD now offers partial share purchases which I think is a great way to afford buying a company like CSU considering its 4000+ cost. I have a small amount to invest and was considering buying a partial share of CSU. At this point in time, considering current valuations and the potential for long term capital growth, would your preference be CSU or one of other Constellation spin offs LMN or TOI. Please explain why you would choose one over the other two. I intend to make this stock purchase within a TFSA. Many thanks for the for the great service that you provide.
