Q: If you held no current position in NTR but wanted to begin one, would you be inclined to buy before or after earnings are released on February 8? I ask because the stock was clobbered after earnings were released in early November 2022.

I realize this is a timing issue which can be a mug's game but I am still interested in your gut feeling.

Thanks as always for your expertise.

Q: Good morning team, BMO, TD and Royal have all announced big acquisitions in the past year. Do you expect each of these to be positive for shareholders in the next 2-4 years. What are some of the individual risks to these deals being accretive? Which of the 3 deals do you expect will provide the best return for investors and why?

Q: I am interested in your ideas for ETF that cover semiconductor stocks. For RRSP. Would prefer non-US-situs ETFs, if good ones exist (estate planning reasons); however, you can suggest US-situs ETFs as well. Can be either US or CA dollar-denominated.

Q: The US dollar seems to be heading lower. You think this might continue for the year?
What is the overall consensus?
Te Mexican peso already strengthened 7% in the last couple of weeks.
How could we play this theme?
Are there any companies you suggest which would benefit from a lower dollar?
Any currencies you think that would have a good upside?

Q: Hi Peter and Staff

Yesterday "D" asked a question about websites to find returns of various indexes and you provided a link for S&P, Nasdaq and TSX. The S&P link clearly said the returns quoted included dividends. Perhaps I missed it but did the other two state whether the returns included dividends.

I am not sure if this is a separate question but when the TSX index shows up on the tickers every day and whether it is up or down and yearly tsx indexes are compared , is it reasonable to assume that is a factored mathematical calculation based on size of companies and their prices over a certain period of time? Does it assume price only or that you re invested the dividends into more shares of those companies?
Thanks for all you do

Q: For a covered call ETF,the ROC will reduce progressively, year after year ,the initial book value,so what will happen then if you don't sell the ETF after many years : if the book value reaches zero, does this means that the book value could then become negative? If not,it will be interesting to keep the ETF for very long term..

Q: Hello 5i,

A general market question.

Seems a though the next “wall of worry”
to climb as inflation is receding is going to be the potential debt default of the US government. I think they will be extending the debt repayment for as long as possible into the summer/fall, but ultimately I believe a refusal by US congress to increase the debt ceiling to be very credible this time around.

Would appreciate your thoughts and how best to position a portfolio for the worst case scenario?

Q: These 3 equities are part of 13 in an income oriented portfolio. SLF is the only financial. If it were you, would you sell one of the Telco.s and purchase a bank? In a word, where would you want to tilt, do you believe the better return lies with financials or with Telco.s. If one is to be sold, which Telco would you let go?

Q: Good day. As an investor, I try to investigate stocks that have good products that I am very familiar along with compelling financials and an excellent story. Sometimes this takes me to non North American locations. I know you don't normally research or comment much on such companies as Mazda but wonder if you could add anything on it.? Perhaps even some comment on the automobile manufacturing industry as an investment, generally. Secondly, Mazda trades as an ADR on the over the counter market. Any precautions that I should be aware of? Thanks.

Q: May I have your thoughts on the USA’s debt ceiling? There is speculation in the press that the most conservative elements (called the “Freedom Caucus”) inside the Republican Party will refuse to raise the debt ceiling without drastic cuts to the country’s chronic budget deficit. In a worse case scenario an impasse will cause government bonds to default. The caucus is quite small but seems to have a large influence over the Republican Party due to its very slender majority in the House Of Representatives. I will need to take some money out of my RRIF this year not covered by the RRIF’s dividend income. Do you think I should be selling stock now or to put it another way will a government bond default is simply not realistic? After all it would take only about 10 Republicans to vote with the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling.

A bond rate spike is typically bad for gold prices but in this case might be positive for gold. Do you agree?

Any thoughts you have would be appreciated.

Q: Hello,

I currently hold the above stocks in my RRSP and have some $ to add. Given current valuations and future growth, could you please rank how you would add new money? Fairly aggressive investor with long time frame. Thank you,

Q: Hi, Richards Packaging stock has been a disappointment for past 2 years. It is down over 50%, from the high of $84 made 2-3 years ago and still keeps drifting lower. Dividend has not grown for many years and the only reason yield shows at 3.5%, as stock price has declined so much. Based on your past comments and considering this stock potential, primarily income, is it worth holding on or move to better options. Also, do you foresee any recovery in the stock price, in 2023, based on company's financials, further integration of the healthcare company, acquired a few years ago and in the backdrop of a slowing economy ? Thanks

Q: I own all of the above US Tech, except ROKU. I was interested in your answer yesterday regarding potential growth for ROKU, all things going well. Amoung these companies, is there anything you would sell to move into ROKU? I don't really want to put new money into more US Tech, but would rather find the right balance in the funds I already have there. Thanks!
