Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Good morning. I watched your interview with Kornel Szejber from Build Wealth Canada. On it you discussed immunization which was most helpful. You also mentioned that you thought of CNR and CP as set it and forget it stocks. With that train of thought in mind which other canadian dividend stocks would you put in this same category? If I was to purchase 10 dividend stocks to take advantage of the dividend tax credit in my non registered acct which would be my main source of income which stocks should I consider.
Thanks
Victoria

Q: Is this iShares 25+ Year Treasury STRIP Bond ETF
buyable now or is it better to wait for interest rates to rise further?

Also I don't understand how there is a yield of 3.95% (according to yahoo finance) if the underlying bonds are zero coupon bonds.

I would appreciate your overall opinion on GOVZ. Thank you

Q: Trane is a stock that had been mentioned here quite often but it has been a while since I have seen any questions about it. In recent months it has had something of a recovery after a surprisingly large drop.

Do you think its upwards momentum will be coming to an end? That is, what do you see as its prospects going forward from here?

When did it last report and what is your view of the numbers from that time? When does it next report and are there any expectations?

Thank you for your excellent service.

Q: The purpose of the following question is to avoid problems with CRA and avoid pitfalls, traps &c.
(1) If tax payer withdraws all their Canadian $ from a TFSA before December 31, 2022 , I understand they can re-deposit the full amount after January 1 2023. Correct? (2) I understand they can re-deposit the *full allowable* amount in US$ (i.e. the US$ equivalent of all the Canadian $ that were just withdrawn). Is that correct? (3) If yes, is it the spot exchange rate that is used for calculating the amount available to put back into the TFSA? If yes, what exactly is the spot rate, what rate is acceptable under tax rules and regs ? What source should one use to get the exchange rate to use— that CRA accepts?
