Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi! Can't help but feel panicked but know wrong thing to do is sell. Your thoughts on this. Can you please provide outlook based on latest Credit Swisse Crisis and explain what is happening. It seems like everyday now we will hear of more failures. From someone with more knowledge can you please advise if we need to just sit tight with portfolios if holding quality dividend paying companies which one relies on for income. At a certain point will the Fed step in and cut interest rates if more systemic issues present? Thank you!!

Q: I have a question about CIPF (Canadian Investor Protection Fund). The latest numbers for this fund state that it only has about $450 million in funds. I recently read that, in 2021, Canadians had about $2 trillion in their investment accounts. So, all CIPF funds in total can cover only about 1/4000th of the total investments of Canadian. In a hypothetical scenario that one of 5 Canadian banks goes bankrupt, the coverage needed may by significantly more than CIPF can offer... do you think the Central Bank of Canada will step in to help cover losses or the available CIPF funds will be distributed to investors and nothing else?
I wouldn't even consider asking this question two weeks ago, but if banks like Credit Suisse get into troubles, Canadian banks are not immune either...

Q: Hello 5i Team

Further the many questions on HISA ETF (i.e. CASH, HSAVE, PSA etc.)

The Globe and Mail on February 09, 2023 a summary of the brokers services including availability to purchase HISA ETF; HISA Mutual Funds; and GIC.

Link (may be behind a pay wall) - https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/article-canadas-top-digital-broker-is-td-direct-investing-with-an-assist-from/

Essentially the three brokerages which do NOT allow HISA ETF are:

BMO Investor Line
RBC Direct Investing
TD Direct Investing

Regardless most brokers allow access to HISA mutual funds, however you may be restricted to the particular brokerages affiliated products (i.e. Royal Bank at RBC Direct Investing TD Bank at TD Direct Investing).

Thanks

Q: In days like this where there is a sell off in a specific sector, oil in this case. I was wondering if these are the type of days where companies that have a share buyback program would be taking advantage of the drop when it might be a panic induced drop. Is it easy to screen which companies are buying back shares on a particular day? If so, I am curious what were some of companies buying back the most shares today.
