Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I'm sorry that you are asked so many questions about equities that are not in 5i's portfolio. I understand that you don't want to be rude and you have a lot of knowledge, but as the membership grows, this is going to consume all your time.

Perhaps if somebody asks about XXX Bank and mentions their great dividend, why not point them at 5i's recommendation of Aston Hill or Fiera Sceptre etc. If XXX Restaurant, simply point them to 5i's Boston Pizza and A&W have been good. Heavy Equipment, look at 5i's Badger. Etc. Etc.

General or specific strategy and investment questions are great and I love reading your suggestions.

I'd just like to see you folks not have to spend so much time on questions that are not related to your portfolio recommendations or investing in general.

This would free you up to have more time for research and finding those hidden gems.

My two cents.

Q: Hi Peter et al, I have had the same experiences as Claude (OCT 11) on being run ahead on trades. It is no longer a level trading floor, so to speak. Does it only happen on the venture exchange? Or does it happen on the main exchange as well? Thanks. Henry

Q: The recent announcement that Shopper's Drug Mart -SC- would be allowed by the government to expand services that could help offset the revenue lost through provincial curbs on generic drug prices was greeted favourably. However, if I understand correctly, the $7.50 per flu shot administered roughly covers costs and the province has not yet promised to pay for other services like renewing prescriptions. Could I have your thoughts on the company in light of these developments. Thanks

Q: hello Peter:
could I have your opinion on WPX Energy, and, if possible, what would be an equivalent (or higher in your estimation), pick in the Canadian energy group.
thanks

Q: Hi Peter:

Any thoughts on DL? I have had it since it paid a dividend (some time ago). I can't figure out why they remain a public company, but wonder how long I should be patient for something to happen. I'm gun shy as I owned Arbour Memorial for over 10 years and sold it shortly before they went private. Thanks, Rick

Q: I`m looking to invest profits from a short-term trade into a long-term hold (5+ years) with decent dividend growth. I like IPL, PPL, and NPI. Is it safe to split my investment between these three names? Do you have a favourite?

Q: Hi Peter & team,
Just wondered what you think of OAKTREE CAPITAL GROUP LLC (OAK)on the US market. I would be buying for the dividend & some growth. Do you see it as a buy, hold or sell.
Thanks in anticipation, best wishes,
Paul.

Q: Hi, I beleive I read once that REITS need to grow to maintain distributions. If real estate is flat and REIT's don't add new assets is cash flow sufficient to maintain current distributions? Thank-you.

Q: re Lance question on bid/ask discrepancies in quantities submitted from 10/08.
This was an important question and may be my experiences with this problem can help (and Peter, please correct me if I am wrong because everybody trading on the venture exchange (micro caps stocks) will face this problem one day.
The broker that you use (in my case BMO Investor Line)may show bid and ask that will reflect the trades on the Venture Exchange only which means that professional traders at their BMO desk who trade on the Alpha trading platform may buy or sell your bid or ask quantities before it is offered to the Venture exchange basically fronting any bid or ask on the venture, this may be why you never see the quantities that you have purchased or sold reflected in a change of the bid/ask on your retail trading platform.
This process is new (as far as I have experienced it 2 years old and getting worst by the day), it destroys the discovery process, and make the bid/ask values on your screen poorly reliable.
I have to say that I have contacted BMO on this subject many times and that without any surprise on my part never got a satisfying answer.
So my way of dealing with this abuse and growing problem is to always trade very carefully with the knowledge that your bid/ask streamer could be showing only a portion of the bid/ask.
I also sometimes test the system (before the market open), placing an ask or bid to see how the values change and cancelling (or not) this bid/ask immediately after.
This subject should be front and center for the IROC as a case for fair trading. But I have to say that calls placed to their attention never got anywhere also.
