Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi 5i Team and Peter, I am about half in cash, and considering new investments, but when i look at the steep charts of most of the companies in the A to B categories and in the the model portfolio, I feel like I've definitely missed the boat. Will you be reporting on new companies or turnaround stories so new investors can capture some similar growth?
I feel pretty good about AYA, which I own (thanks for that one), and, I'm looking for similar stories. I don't need a dividend, and I have a very high tolerance for risk. Would EQI be one that I should consider. I like the fact that 5i knows management and expects rapid growth in 2013, but as a poker player, I feel I understand the gaming business better than the "mortgage" business. If not EQI, can you recommend a couple of other stories that are just "beginning to unfold"?

Q: Hi Peter and Team

I am still holding Zargon (ZAR)with a pretty big loss. But every time I go over their material on their web site, it looks so attractive. I am usually pretty disciplined selling losers in December in order to lower my capital gains taxes but I may not do that this year. This is the big year for capex on their ASP flood technology but if that works it looks like gravy from 2014 on. I guess that is the big risk. It looks like a good risk to me. I am also considering buying some more. I have lots of capital gains to more than balance off my loss position so I am not hurting from a portfolio point of view. So what do you think of it at its current price and my thinking. Thanks

Q: Hi Peter and team,

I am curious to hear your thoughts on MRD's spin-out of MR.UN. If you were to buy one of the two, which would you prefer? In theory, this gives MRD the cash they need to grow quickly in the cash-intensive development business... do you agree with this strategy?

Q: I love buying low and selling high (who doesn't ;-) I'm wondering when our oil sector will be the time to buy again and if I should be buying the good companies at these depressed prices on the worst down market days, or, if the fundamentals have changed so drastically with the explosion of fracking and bad oil sands press, that the sector will stay bearish for some time yet? Certainly Keystone will (if approved) provide some lift to the whole group, but what is your view for the oil sector as a whole? thanks.

Q: Hello 5i Team. Will the new June 1 rule by the dairy marketing board on cheese, effectively allowing Canadian businesses to buy mozzarella at market prices, mean that either Boston Pizza of Saputo now get strong buy recommendations. I believe that the new rule will lower cheese cost by approximately 30% and mozzarella is a significant portion of each pizza. Thanks for your thoughts on this question.
