Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Thank you, Peter and staff, for providing what I would label as an "essential service" to those interested in the world of investment. As a relatively new investor, your reports and replies to member questions have been invaluable in helping me make more informed decisions and learning about the market - thank you. Question: Your reports and replies often refer to "management", and how important they are. What consitutes a management team that receives your seal of approval, and where does one find such information (other than 5i Research)? Would you care to give an example of a good management team in some, or all, of the following Canadian sectors: Banks, Transportation, Telecoms, Pipelines, Metals & Mining, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Consumer Goods and Health Care. Many thanks. John.

Q: Hello 5i Team. Another question on Zenyatta ZEN. Here is article from Finacial post. http://seekingalpha.com/instablog/449647-tradingchief/1526391-zenyatta-ventures-rarest-form-of-graphite-at-the-highest-purity-levels-recorded

I heard yesterday that they had over 2m warrants exercised 1.5m of these were shorted and 500k bought. Same again today so they now have 5m in the bank.
Would the shorting of these warrants be holding the SP back and once all warrants exercised we could maybe expect forward movement?
Thanks
Don

Peter are the ratings on your Jan PDF report redone for the report or the same as they were on the report date? If they are the same will you be redoing them in another pdf?
Also what is your strategy on being fully invested vs cash - do you try to time corrections or bear market downturns? what % cash do you like to keep?
Tks.

Q: Peter,
In praise (at last) of a very strait forward comment of their dismal drop of share price, Gold canyon says this: ....Management has recently engaged in significant consultation with Gold Canyon shareholders, investment brokers, analysts, institutional traders and investment bankers regarding potential contributing factors to the Company's share price weakness and large trading volumes and believes the following may be attributed, at least in part, to the recent downward pressure and larger trading volumes in the market for Gold Canyon shares:

Market participants have indicated that, due to investor fatigue with the mining sector, both retail and institutional, and prolonged mining sector weakness, resource money managers are experiencing higher than normal redemption challenges in their funds and managed accounts, causing them to sell shares to raise the cash needed to make redemption payments. With respect to Gold Canyon's shares in particular, the continued recent demand has resulted in bids to buy at reasonable valuation levels, providing the sellers with better liquidity than is the case with many other mining issuers, and indeed than had historically been the case with Gold Canyon until very recently.
Gold Canyon had historically issued a large number of "flow-through" common shares which, because of the associated tax treatment in Canada for qualified flow-through mining expenditures undertaken by the Company, carry a much lower cost base than regular shares. The lower cost base allows resource money managers to sell these shares at prices that, despite declining market prices generally, are still profitable, providing more attractive optics than selling at a loss....

Now,long after 5i research confirmed the dangers of convertible debentures, one company is doing the same with Flow Through. A rare public press release indeed (and also totally self serving of course but why not).
What do you think? And where does that leave the value of the company stock (I do not own it)

Q: Further to the recent question regarding SU and VET (going from the former to the latter), should the same question be put to you with respect to CNQ and COS versus VET, would you still recommend transferring to VET ? For the same reasons ? Comparatively of course, CNQ and COS are also cheaper, and COS provides a good dividend. Both CNQ and COS face the 'oil sands' issues, but COS gets a much better price for its synthetic oil.

Q: Hi all - I was hoping to take adavantage of this rally to sell my position in AGT if the fundamentals weren't improving. Do I need a couple of more quarters to pass before determining my strategy? Thanks very much.
