Q: US mortgage/ REiT stocks like NLY, HTS, MORT: I am looking at share price decreases in the 20-30% range. These were bought for the dividend income; and I can hold for 5-10 years. Strategically would me best move be to hold-sell or buy more at these levels?

Thanks for your guidance.

Q: hi , thanks for taking another question of mine. i am trying to remember if there was any great investments back in the early 80s when interest rates ran up so much besides the obvious of really high interest on your cash . I hope your memory is better than mine.

Q: Given the recent spike in bond yields do you think it would be wise to reduce exposure to bonds (held in mutual funds or etfs, either pure bond or as part of a balanced fund) and either increase equity exposure or simply move the fixed income allocation into cash / money market? Are we at a turning point where bonds are higher risk than equities? I think Buffett made some comments to that effect last year.

Q: Peter - what are your thoughts on FIE - Claymore Financial Monthly Income Fund. I like the 7.3% Yield. I am looking at a 10% weighting in my portfolio. Is the low daily volume trade in this fund a concern? What are the risks? Thank You.

Q: Hi Team,
I've been contemplating taking a position in either H&R (HR.UN) or Artis REIT (AX.UN). Upon comparing the two based on fundamentals, Artis seems to win hands down. It's PE is cheaper, their ROE is higher, their dividend is higher, and their payout ratio is about 36%, as opposed to 114% for H&R.
One difference I did notice was that H&R's profitability was increasing at a much higher rate last few years.
Given the above, what other reasons might i want to consider in making a choice? I want to go with your favourite, H&R, but it's hard to argue with the numbers.

Q: Hi,

This is another suggestion for Don. If you use excel you can download Excel functions file called RCH_Stock_Market_Functions-2.0k. Once you have downloaded it, you can unzip the files and save them in a folder in your Windows program files by creating a folder called SMF Add-in. Then go to Excel options and select add ins and then browse. Here you can refer to the progam file folder and select the file RCH_Stock_Market_Functions from the folder. This pulls quotes from Yahoo and updates them each time you open the Excel File but only pulls latest price information. Toronto stocks are followed by .TO or .V

Q: I'm looking to buy at least one of the Big-5 Canadian Banks. There is all this chatter in the last 2 years about a housing crash and I'm not immune to this constant rhetoric in the news and blogosphere. Therefore I'm hesitant to put money into these banks, but I also don't want to ignore the pretty stable dividends that they can provide. Would you suggest that I make the investment in the banks now and if so, which of the big 5 is the safest?

Q: Generally speaking, would you expect to see decreased earnings and profit growth from the banks as interest rates increase.

Q: Hi Team, In response to Don's question, I use MS Excel, it has a link to get real time quote on the MSN website (Data/Existing connections/MSN MoneyCentral Investor Stock Quotes), a bit complex to setup, but well worth it. I use it all the time.
