Q: Hello! A small allocation in gold makes sense to me. I have taken a look at HGY and I would be interested to know what are the pros and cons of investing in such a fund. Receiving a decent yield while holding seems attractive to me and buying on dips would be something I could consider. Your insights on HGY would be welcome. Thank you,

"Yesterday, the company announced that it will offer 5.95 million shares of common stock in a public offering. Furthermore, the underwriter has the option to buy 892,500 additional shares in the 30 days after the offering."

We all know this sector has a future. The market did not like this announcement. Could this move be for acquisition purposes? And if so, what would this mean moving forward? Any other comments are appreciated.

Q: Hello Peter, Weyerhaeuser, WY-N, is in the process of splitting off it's real estate holdings which are to combine with it's subsidiary Tri Pointe Homes TPH-N. It appears to be a fairly convoluted transaction. From a growth perspective, does it make more sense to convert the WY shares to the ultimate WRECO shares or keep the now less diluted WY shares.

Q: I too, am nervous about gold stocks. When I joined 5i I made a promise to myself: no gold, and no oil and gas stocks. Too volatile. So far I've kept my promise. I'd like a bit of clarification on your response to the MS member's question. I don't want to own gold, but I do like the concept of insurance. Can you explain how the insurance would work. (I seem to remember you saying it did not work in 2008) When and how would it work? I understand inflation protection, I think. But if I owned 5% Goldcorp, as in model portfolio, what scenario would make me glad I owned it. And if the portfolio dropped 30% in some crisis, would gold rise to compensate. How much insurance would a 5% Goldcorp position offer. I realize that this is a hard hypothetical question to answer but in your experience, when was owning gold a good thing. I know you are not an insurance salesman, but please sell me on the idea of insurance. (No hurry to answer this question.) Thanks.

The sector Categories RBC uses seem to line up nicely with yours,with one exception, namely Real Estate. Where would you place stocks like HR.un, DIR.un, CWT.un, AP.un,AAR.un,RUF.u, RIO.un?

Q: What would the benefits to a company and shareholders be that it would get share buy-back approval, understanding it needn't be done, and then announce a 2/1 split? It seems that the 2 actions are contrary. Thanks, Gayle

Q: Hello Peter, I’m very pleased to join you as a new member. Hoping you can respond to a question.
I have a well-diversified RSP, but have a good amount of uninvested cash in my TFSA. I don’t expect to need any money from the TFSA for at least 5 – 7 years, and feel I can take somewhat more risk. I would appreciate your suggestions for a mini-portfolio of about five stocks for longer term gains. I would hope to double the portfolio over the next 5 years between dividends and capital gains. (I already own FSV, HCG, and SJ.) Thank you in advance.
