Q: Peter,
First, I like the video!
I am hoping you a can address the role that analysts play in the movement of stock prices. On the one hand, I understand and accept that they can have a vested interest in a stock and therefore their predictions as to stock price and the interest they may show in a stock can be biased.
However, when it comes to projecting sales and earnings, their comments seem to be given a lot of weight, as in the company missed on this or that or the company exceeded expectations and the stock price almost always acts accordingly. If they have a vested interest as noted above, wouldn't they tend to underestimate these things so the stock will look good? they seem to be wrong most of the time anyway.
In a nutshell, then, why believe analysts on the one hand but not on the other hand?
Q: With the ongoing legalization of marijuana, do you follow any companies that will benefit from a new potential industry? I noticed cann and erbb had a 28% gain today, also I understand mdbx and grnh can benefit, what are your thoughts on these and the industry in general?
Q: Good Morning 5i Crew
Interested in Amaya Gaming AYA. Do you have any information on when it will be reporting earnings and what analysts are expecting? Is there a key date that information will be released from the New Jersey gaming industry generally which could impact Amaya. Any general comments on how you see it progressing with US states supporting online gaming?
Thanks for you always valued advice!
Q: My wife and I are retirees and like many of us had most of our RRSP/RRIF in mutual funds. In the past year have moved more into the market and particularly since joining 5i have most of of the stocks in your model portfolio. I believe we should better balance our portfolio by reducing holdings in these funds as combined they total about 30% of it.
Funds are 30k each in C.I.Harbour, PHN Div. fund, 20K in Scotia BNS 313. We do now hold a position in ETF's: XIU, XRE,CDZ, and for U.S. VFV. Am thinking of trading some of the funds to items we are missing in the model such as STN, MG, KBL, We also have Rogers, and TD so have not replaced with BNS or Telus as yet.
Looking obviously for security with some growth and feel more U.S. items should be included but would prefer to buy on TSX rather than U.S. exchanges. Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance and if there is some sort of award available for honest, impartial, financial advice, 5i should win it hands down. If so where do we all vote???
I expect this to be my only question for the year and will not tie you up with frequent ones.
Q: Re: BPO
I have about 600 shares of BPO and the current price is just below $ 21; I would have made a 20% profit which is great
There is now a tender for the BPO to be converted to another BAM unit, (could be the BPY)
The offer expires on March 19
I wonder if the book value of BPO is higher than the $ 21
and I could hang on for a few more weeks to see?
your advice would be greatly appreciated as I have a hard time to understand the full value of BPO ? or the conversion to another Brookfield units could trigger tax consequences and would it be a decent investment ? (looking for some income which BPO pays and also abit of capital gain: not too risky);
thanks!
Q: Hello. I have had Sherritt shares for sometime now and wonder if I should hang on for awhile longer or sell as I have taken a bit of a loss in it.
Thanks, Fran
Q: Hi folks, new member here with a first question !
I am a Quebec resident investing inside a corporation (holdco). I currently have cash to deploy and wondering if i should invest in Horizon "Tax-Optimized" ETF (HXT/HXS).
For the US holding, I already hold VTI but I want to avoid purchasing more USD denominated securities to avoid US estate tax liabilities in the future. So my pick is between VUN and HXS.
For the Canadian holding, I already hold VCE. My pick is between VCN/VCE and HXT.
I understand how Horizon ETF works but i am wondering if they make sense in my particular situation (holdco, quebecers, etc).
Q: re Petrowest Corp PWSEF... road/pad builder for oil companies... Considered one of the best companies in crushing work in Western Canada it has done well the past 18 months. Announced $26 mill contract in Dec 2014 to expand Hyw 63 Edm - Ft McMurray. Can you comment on what we might expect in the coming year?
Q: Hi
Do you consider ANV as quite speculative in the gold and silver sector.
If the precious metals stay strong this company seems to have lots of room to increase in price.
I look forward to your opinion.
Have a nice weekend

Q: It seems that every time I buy a stock everybody else should short it because it drops 12-18% within the next couple of weeks. Here are 5 that have already had this drop recently: Y, AVO, AD, MMW, HNL. Would be a buyer of any of these? I appreciate this type of service that you supply.
