Q: My question is about bep.un. Another member has also asked you a question about it today.

The National Bank Market Q internet site indicates also weak earning P/E of 244 and 669 for the Dividend/Earning ratio.

BRF preferred shares are getting hammered. The BRF/PF offered April 24,2013 are now yieldind 6.68% and their earning coverage ratio is only 0.7 time.

Same situation for BAM/PN and BAM/PM while those of Brookfield Office such as BPO/PH have remained relatively stable during the same time period.

Would it be safe to buy the BRF and BAM preferred shares for their high yield?

Regards

Q: DHX Media announces $133 million secondary offering of common shares... DHX WILL NOT receive any of the net proceeds from the Offering. http://www.newswire.ca/en/story/1279377/dhx-media-announces-133-million-secondary-offering-of-common-shares I'm confused... Why would a company do this and not receive any proceeds? - please help me to understand how this practice benefits me as a shareholder. - Cheers.

Q: In a recent answer you mentioned the concept buying SLF as interest rate protection, Could you please elaborate. I assume you mean the insurers will do well when interest rates go up despite their recent run. Can you clarify why. Do you think the same would be true for the banks? I hold lots of bank stocks and this would please me very much. I hold few insurers an asking should consider holding my nose and buying more.
Thanks, Manfred

Q: Peter and Co, thanks for the exceptional service.
My question is off topic in some ways but it may have implications for one of Peter's favourite stocks, BNS.
Reuters has reported that in Germany, the UK and the USA there are ongoing investigations into the suspected manipulation of the benchmark pricing of gold and silver. This investigation comes on the heels of the LIBOR price-fixing scandal. The Bank of Nova Scotia-ScotiaMocatta is one of the five banks that are involved in the twice-a-day price fixing for gold.
If there is found to be manipulation in the gold price-fixing, how significant would this be for BNS if ScotiMocotta is implicated?
Thanks.

Q: Hi Peter

In an article recently written by Boyd Erman he painted a negative picture of the U.S. residential rental market. He mentions that early players in the rental market like Carrington Holdings were having problems finding tenants for their properties, and that the returns aren't there anymore,he also mentions Tricon in this aricle. If Tricon experiences the same problems how much would this impact their earnings and cash flow?
Thanks Gord

Q: I believe I have read that it is unwise to purchase mutual funds in december because they allocate certain amounts that accumulate over the year therefore you could be in for a capitol gain or other tax liability that you did note participate in. I have two funds left to liquidate as a result of moving all my accounts to a discount broker and reallocating resources to individual stocks and ETFs.
Is there any advantage to selling these two funds now to avoid this year end fund activity? I would be doing so early in the new year anyway.

Thank you so much for an educational and profitable year. All the best for the Season and 2014 to the 5i team and members.

Q: A really general question but could you provide a prognostication/guess on the January markets in general. Do you foresee a major shift to the downside and should investors be more defensive than usual.
About 80% of my names are good dividend payers....but I have a few that would suffer when the tide goes out.
