Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: You answered a question from Ralph about using HFR as a "safe place to park excess cash sitting in a discount brokerage RRSP, perhaps for a few months, while waiting to invest it in the market". Outside an RSP I have used HFP to park cash. It yields 3.25%, receives benefits of dividend tax credit. It is not a big trader so there is a bit of a bid/ask spread, but I have found if I am able to wait a day or two I have always been able to get for equal to or better than my buy price. Any caveats?

Q: Hi Peter and team,

Understand you don't follow the US Equities that closely but I have owned Disney for some time but its valuation seems a little overdone here and I was considering the switch to TWX since it is trading at a much cheaper multiple. My question is will the sell off of the cable division impact TWX overall and do you think this is worth the switch?

Q: Hi Peter
Thanks for your recent newsletter my favorite read of the day. We bought Altus Group (AIF) because of an answer to a question from back in Aug. We did some research and have being holding it since. It had a good jump this week. Would you say it is still a buy or just a hold. It makes up less than 1% of our portfolio. Thanks for groups time and effort.

Q: I still hold my Paladin PLB shares and wonder what you think of Endo's ENDP results. Is this good, bad, or neutral? Wondering why they guided lower for 2014 after the Paladin acquisition. Is it time to sell Paladin?

Endo Health beats by $0.04, misses on revs; guides FY14 EPS below consensus, revs in-line (ENDP) : Reports Q4 (Dec) earnings of $0.96 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.04 better than the Capital IQ Consensus Estimate of $0.92; revenues fell 26.8% year/year to $548.9 mln vs the $620.71 mln consensus.

Q: What are your thoughts on CIBC? (cm)

For whatever reason, CIBC seems to be the black sheep of the Canadian banks? Why is that? While TD and BNS seem to be talked about constantly, few seems to talk about CIBC.

Comparatively, the other Canadian banks are trading well above 2007 highs while CIBC still trades at a 15% discount to 2007 highs.

Given its strong earnings report today and 2 dividend raises in the last year, CIBC looks cheap compared to peers. What do you think?

Thanks

Q: DCI

I would like to thank everyone who panicked and sold DCI in the last couple of days because Mr Hodgins enticed them to do so. I bought several shares at 15.55 yesterday and I think at that price Mr H is covering his self-serving call. I will hold through earnings and see. Isn't DCI trading at 4x CF well below it's historical average of 6-7x???

Q: Greetings, Peter and Co. I have held Melcor (MRD) long enough to enjoy the sgrowing semi-annual dividend, now at $0.50 or 2.46%. There were special dividends of $0.50 in 2013 and $0.10 in 2005. While the yield is adequate, would there be an alternate company in the sector that you would consider a better investment?
With appreciation.
