Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: After years of consolidation, do you think Canadian Oil Sands is due for a revaluation by the investment community? Looking at their capex programme, their big expenditures are out of the way in 2015. With the past CEO stating that their objective is to pay out free cash flow to shareholders, I think COS could increase the current dividend from $1.40 to $2+ if synthetic oil prices stay $90+ and production volumes stabilize.

Looking forward to your views. Thank-you for efforts.

Q: I sold half my position in Exchange (EIF) last fall to claim a loss. It has gone down further, and I am now debating buying back the portion sold. It is held for income, and currently represents 1% of portfolio, and my purchase would bring it back to 2%. Do you think this is a reasonable idea, or should I just sit tight? Or even sell the remainder? Is the dividend safe, and do you have any concerns relating to the new debenture offering? Thank-you for your consideration.

Q: Hi - my TFSA of $32,000 is currently invested as following:

CDH - 50% (recently come alive again; still a believer :-)
Front Street Growth Fund - 7.68% (tough 2 years for Lamarche)
MEI - 25% (good long-term potential - liking it)
CASH - 17% (where to go?)

The goal of my TFSA is aggressive high growth. I like MCR; AVO; BYD.UN and DHX for the cash. Any comments and suggestions to potentially restructure the portfolio and deploy the cash to achieve diversified aggressive growth are appreciated. thx!

Q: Hello 5i crew -

I've had my eye on Element Financial for awhile now. I know you consider it expensive at this point. If you cannot recommend a price entry, can you advise of a metric or two you would watch before pulling the trigger?

How much faith do you have with Mr. Hudson as CEO? He seems to have big plans. My concern is his history. The Newcourt Credit Group that he had built didn't exactly end very well. Your thoughts?

Thanks.

Jim

Q: Hi 5i team,

Couple of beginner questions: I've recently graduated, and am starting to build a portfolio for longer term savings. At the moment, I have 500 shares of Power Corp (POW), and another ~$10 000 cash that I'm looking to invest. First, how concerned with diversity should I be right off the bat? - that is, would you recommend taking a larger (say $5K) stake in 2 companies, or several smaller stakes in a number of companies? Would it be worth selling some of my stake in POW and invest in other sectors for more balance?

Q: BLD. seems to have attracted 'some' attention. I got beat-up on this stock during the dot-com bubble. Do you have an opinion....is it worth a small investment? Best regards.
