Q: BDI's earnings over the past couple of years have been relatively flat. While revenues have grown. expenses have kept pace. Is their inability to grow the bottom line due to the competitive nature of their business or is it perhaps due to how the business is being managed? If it is the former, my sense is that business is only getting tougher. I would appreciate your comments on this and your thoughts as to what might move the stock higher. The company will be reporting soon, but based on projections earnings will be much the same as previous years. So my question remains why hold or buy this company?

Q: I need some hand holding on this stock. It seems to be breaking down and looks to become a prime tax loss candidate (if not already in its thrall). Is it as bad as all that?
Q: Hello: This firm pays a dividend of nearly 8%. However their debt is quite high. If we have increasing interest rates do you think their share price would be affected considerably over the next couple of years?
Q: Hi Peter and team. Can you please comment on TMA's recent earnings and the market's reaction to them.
Thanks!

Q: this is more of a general question.
I own BDI, WSP, MCB & SJ all down significantly and all losses YTD for me except SJ. I expect that the carnage is over but are they all dead money for some time to come (although the dividend yield has by default improved) and a switch into something else within your two portfolios provide a better return.
Of the 4, which does the team expect the best risk/reward return over the next 12 months and within the 2 portfolios which stocks would you replace them with to be in a better position in 12 months?
On the other hand, if these are strong well managed companies, is it best to wait for an improved Global economy which should lift them back.
thanks so much!

Q: What are your thoughts on this company. I do have a profit at the moment.
Q: Could you give your current opinion on Gilead.
Are there other similar sector names you would prefer?

Q: Due to recent maturing of some bonds and GICs I now have about 15% of my substantial RRIF in cash. I will not need this cash as my bond ladder will cover the next 5 years of withdrawals. I originally planned to use such cash to extend my bond ladder but do not want to be tied to current low interest rates for 6+ years. Can you recommend an etf, or individual stocks that offer good income and low risk for a long holding period.
Q: Greetings to Peter and staff,
I am currently holding the atp series D convertible debentures ^% maturing 31/12/2019 bought at issue. I know your thoughts ( and mine) of the company, but what are the chances of default , or, dilution on this issue? should I just take the loss now and move on, or is there still hope that I will recover my initial investment?
Thank you for the great service you provide.
Larry

Q: Hello 5i,
I will be building out the bond part of my portfolio in time. My thinking is to structure that part of the portfolio with BB- to BB+ bonds that have a time horizon of eight years max.
What do you think of this strategy?
Thanks,

Q: ABM Industries (ABM.us)is in the business services sector.
Would you care to comment please?
The following is for your general interest only: ABM was in the dividend portfolio of the American Association of Individual Investors. AAII dropped ABM from its dividend portfolio almost a year ago. I hung on to it. Good as it is, AAII doesn’t get everything right (no one can).
I am wondering whether ABM still has reasonable potential for share-price appreciation. If you are not keen on this name, would you care to suggest another?
Thank you.

P.S Impressive how you all manage to respond so promptly and succintly. I ask you please to consider a coup d'etat of the US Gov. (Whoa...I did NOT say what I just said)

Q: Thanks to 5i the last couple of years have been very good. Thank you for your help. I now own most of the income and growth portfolio stocks, plus an assortment of other stocks as well; and am prepared to commit new money to the market now.
Over the last few years I have been monitoring 2 other "model"portfolios that I set up on Globe Investor Gold. I call them Brookfield (BAM.A,BOX.UN, BGI.UN,BIP.UN,BPY.UN,BRE and BEP.UN) and Tobacco (MO, PM,LO,RAI and VGR). Both portfolios show very nice and consistent positive results from year to year. YTD 2014, Brookfield is up 16.2% and Tobacco is up 27.9%. In both cases, share price gains are augmented by decent sized dividends as well. All of this with no buying /selling or even rebalancing.
As a non smoker who owns no tobacco stocks currently, I cringe in asking this question. But I do need to grow my portfolios. Could you endorse putting real money into the above mentioned portfolios? From my perspective, it seems reasonably safe, and provides a degree of sector and international diversification. And I do need US dollars from time to time. The dividends on the tobacco stocks would help in that regard.
As usual your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
