Q: I enjoy the weekly 5 from 5i. Thank you for that value added information.

This week the article on the solar industry piqued my curiosity. Are there any US or Canadian stocks that you can recommend for an investor wanting to test the waters in this industry, and preferably not get burned?

As usual, thank you for your help.

Q: Could I please have your thoughts on Long Run. It's dropped much more than my other oil & gas stocks since the energy sell-off began, and the yield has now climbed to 10%. Is it still worth holding? I'm a long-term investor with a dividend focus, and also hold BTE, CPG, SGY, VET and WCP. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Q: Hi team, just wondering what you think of offshore drilling companys currently. They have been absolutely battered. How would you compare the big offshore drillers compared to some of the drillers working in western canada. On top of that, should I be very concerned about currency risk? Thanks in advance

Q: In your experience when do institutions do most of their tax loss selling? Would it be mid-November or late November and then they buy back in January and that would account for the so-called January effect in small cap stocks. Thanks for all your sound advice.

Q: I am aware that you favor not selling when positions are down a significant amount when nothing has changed with the holding; good companies are good companies even when the stock price is down. You also believe, and I agree, that market timing is very difficult.

I am an older investor and I favor dumping a position if it declines by a set percentage { eg 10% } to restrict my losses. I then take the proceeds from the sale and move on to another good company.

My objective is to avoid situations where the stock price can fall more than 50% and who knows how long it will take just to recover.

I am interested in what your thoughts are as this applies to older investors. Thank you for any input.

Q: Greetings from BC: I read the following in a gaming article, but I did not see any of this news coming from the company. Does that mean that it is not "material"? The article said it was the reason behind Amaya's recent drop in share price. The whole gray-market issue is not something I've heard much about, but I guess Canada is also a gray market. Perhaps they are doing this to clean up Poker Stars and Full-Tilt in order to prepare to face US regulators?

Amaya Gaming withdraws from 'gray areas'
Since the acquisition of their parent company Oldford Group Limited by the Amaya Gaming Group, PokerStars and Full Tilt have already undergone several significant changes. These included, amongst others, the launch of the new PokerStars 7 client and an opening to the casino world with the inclusion of roulette and blackjack games to PokerStars.es.

Amaya CEO David Baazov says the company intends to use both PokerStars and Full Tilt to enter new verticals like casino and the sports betting, but the group does not seem keen to keep working in "gray markets" where online games are not expressly prohibited or strictly regulated.

What do you think?

Q: Hi 5i team,
I am wondering whether to cut losses on BDI, it seems in a freefall for the past 6 months. The stock is down over 30% from its high point in May and continues its decline today despite overall market direction. Yesterday, I received notification from BMO that 5 brokerages either downgraded or cut prices on BDI... I know you were positive on BDI in the past, what are your current thoughts on this stock. Are fundamentals still solid? Do you anticipate it to recover from current lows within one year timeframe? Thanks.
