Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: In your estimation will the Healthcare sector be effected by what is currently happening to Valeant, Concordia, PHM etc. It's the old cockroach theory. An ETF such as ZUH or comparable products might not be immune. Would it be wise to avoid this sector until the dust settles? Would it be wise to get out entirely for the time being?

Thanks

Q: Hello team,

Please inform me how these fixed income ETF'S are taxed?
If taxed as income i would consider holding them in a registered account.

Thanks for your help

Q: Hello Peter & 5i team,
I'm quite frustrated at the way the market reacts to a Citron report whose motivation is quite questionable; is it not possible that their report is so designed as to support their objective of shorting the stock?
Supposing their report is misleading, how is it possible that they can get away with it with impunity?
Now that the QSC starts investigating Valeant, who is investigating Citron?
Regards,
Antoine

Q: Your report on GUD indicated a very favourable view of the company. I would appreciate your thoughts on the possibility/likelihood of the very smart and very patient Mr. Goodman taking advantage of the recent slaughter among many of the small cap specialty pharma companies. Is this when that large cash balance starts to be deployed?
Thanks.

Q: Hi guys,

Would it be possible to get some help regarding how many shares, of the 4 million, Glenn Chamandy has sold already in his share disposition plan?

CIBC's Investor's Edge has consensus 2016 estimates at $1.91US which translates to $2.51 Canadian. The shares, here, look pretty attractive to me, trading at just over 15x 2016 estimated earnings. However, I'm not sure I want to add to my position if Mr. Chamandy still has several more weeks of selling ahead of him.

Thanks for your help.

Q: You can still place an expression of interest for Hydro One shares at Virtual Brokers. iTRADE had their books open for almost a week: to me this indicates demand is not high and shares are unlikely to lift on the first day of trading unless shares are priced at the low end of the range. Publish if you think this is instructive.

Q: May I have your opinion of this company?

I'm looking at this as a turnaround play. Stock has been absolutely hammered; but there appears tremendous upside and value here. They were on the brink of bankruptcy due to leverage, and have since recapitalized. They have a cash flow positive assets in Nicaragua as well... Is this a value trap? or a bet worth taking for a patient investor with guts?

Not to encourage groupthink but I've searched the company profile on Morningstar.ca and discovered that this company is a top position in a mutual fund called Pender Small Cap Opportunities.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this. I understand that these kind of bets can be volatile.

P.S: I own most of your growth portfolio and am comfortable within the small cap realm of investing, with a time frame over 20 years. Great work on the small cap special report. Keep it up.

Q: Hi Peter & team,
Quote from your answers to CPD
"We would be 'OK' with CPD for safe income. However for any strategy or fund that requires systematic withdrawals, such as an RRIF, we would not suggest it as a great ETF in which to initiate a position."

Please explain your position, thanks. In our case, the withdrawal will be equal to minimum

Q: My advisor recommended Fidelity Northstar Fund for some international exposure in my RSP account. Although it does not distribute a dividend, it has shown good growth for 5 (17.19%) and 10 (8.55%) years. I am not sure if you have to hold it for a minimum period of time. Your thoughts please. I am not sure if the net costs to me are worthy of holding this fund in my RSP and I also wonder if you advise foreign content in a CDN RSP

Q: Team:

What does Valeant do?
Research. Little or none.
Piles on massive amounts of debt to buy companies. Raises prices.
May or not be stuffing the channel to record higher sales.
Accounting is probably aggressive.
Been around for 49 years seen this story before.
The debt or the deception will get them in the end.
Reading your answers you do not seem to have the same level of concern.
One of the earlier questions got this right.
PANIC.
