Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I use the TD discount brokerage. I established the account almost 20 years ago when I was virtually broke. Since then, I've used the phone #613-783-6322 (Ottawa) they've given me. In the past couple of years, I've gone to "President Account" status, still using this phone # (good memory and too lazy to look up phone numbers) and got through relatively quickly. The question I put out to members is whether TD discount brokerage gives this "less wait time" special status based on the phone number you call (in which case now many more people have it) or the phone # you have on file, or is it associated with the "voice print" sign in.
PS. The best decision (albeit, forced between a rock and a hard place) is leaving the "TD wealth advisor" and doing investments on my own with 5i!!!! I'm so truly grateful! I've done far better than I'd ever imagine.

Q: Is there any explanation for EWH's sudden rise this week? Is the Chinese economy coming out of its funk? Iron ore prices still seem weak when I look at my LIF shares.

Q: I am a bit confused on these stock splits. BAM announced a 3 for 2 stock split this week. What is the advantage of doing a 3 for 2 split as compared to 2 for 1 split? How is this decided? Who gains if anybody from this split?

Tnx

Hi 5i staff
You show Metro having a 4.1% dividend in your "5i Filter - Very Shareholder Friendly" Blog Table today, but when I search various sources I get a 1.80% dividend at the Morningstar website, and a 1.29% yield from the TSX website. What is correct.
Thankyou... Paul K

Q: Hi Peter,

Your recent answers about Surge Energy (SGY) have shaken me a little. Your advice is all about the long-term and don’t worry what the markets are doing with the current price. In answers to members, SGY has gone from a strong buy to a sell (Peter’s answer on April 9) in less than a year. In my mind, that means SGY is no longer a good long-term investment and should be sold by all members.

In your opinion (not worrying about sector diversification), IS SGY A SELL FOR ALL CONSERVATIVE, INCOME ORIENTED MEMBERS?

Is there a quick way you can advise all members about the change in your opinion on any stock you give advice on?

Thanks
John

Q: I have owned Transalta for 15 years and have had it on dividend reinvestment for the same period. All of the other utility stocks that I own have performed well (ema, fts, trp, enb) but TA has been an underperformer. I am considering switching TA for Capital Power (CPX) and was wondering if you would agree with this switch.

Q: Peter, I have a $60,000 TFSA and have let my winners run. My stocks are BYD (33%); DHX (33%); FSV (15%); KLS (10%) and 9% cash. I am considering trimming my positions in BYD and DHX and selling KLS. I do not have a need for the money and have a long time frame and was considering adding CXI; CCL.B; ATD.B.

Q: Good Morning Peter and the 5i Team,

A comment regarding Gildan: I took my grandson to the Halton Skills competition in Milton this morning, and was pleased to see that all the t-shirts supplied to the participants were in large Gildan boxes. Owning GIL, thanks to the superb advice from 5i, has been most rewarding! Thanks for such timely recommendations.

Q: Those who trade with TD should know they have a President's Account for investors with $500K+ or 5K annual commissions. Among the benefits is this - "The President's Account clients have an exclusive Priority Phone Line they can call into which will be routed to an experienced professional with quicker wait times." Streaming and Level 2 quotes is another big plus, and Globe Investor Gold. You may have to ask for it; I don't know why TD doesn't advertise it.
