Q: Hi 5i: Many thanks for the opinion on PANW and for the suggestion re FEYE. One problem I have with many high flying new companies is that most of the usual fundamental ratios are either negative or do not exist. What measures and/or ratios do you look at to assess the prospects of such companies? Thanks again.

Q: Hello Peter and Co.:
If you were to suggest one oil stock to buy today for a 2-3 year hold what would it be? I'm looking at VET or WCP but maybe you like a different one.
My only other energy holding right now apart from IPL and PPL (utilities?), is PEY, which I intend to hold onto and possibly add to at these levels.
I could be wrong, but I can't see there's much downside to Canadian energy companies right now. Getting paid around 6% to wait a year or so for the recovery seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Buy low and sell high is the thing to do, we all know that, but actually DOING it is extremely hard because it feels like the completely wrong thing to do! In my limited experience managing my investments, it seems that doing the complete opposite of what feels good generally leads to success...

Would love your take on this.

Thanks for all your excellent advice over the past couple of years.

Q: Thank you very much for what you did for me until now! I love you guys!!
I have a position in CFX and I saw that they give an extra dividend or $1.12 which represents almost all the cash company has on balance sheet. The stock dropped ~5% in 2 days. What could be the reason for it? The company seems to do the right things, stock holder friendly.....
Thank you

Q: Hi, I've owned this awhile, but I seem to be getting no "pop' due to the rising USD vs CAD. Is it hedged against a rise in the USD? What I was wanting when I bought this, was US Large Cap Div exposure with a USD exposure vs CAD. Can you recommend another US index fund that would participate in the continued CAD decline?

Q: Regarding Carl's (I think) question on MacDonald Dettwiler. Scotia, today, lowered their 2016 and 2017 eps estimates from $7.14 to $6.83 and from $7.91 to $7.66. They also lowered their price target to $98 from $102.

The Scotia report recognized the high quality of MCD's business, backlog and earning's growth but the above adjustments were made in light of current challenges in the current satellite market.

Only post if you find helpful.

Q: earlier today, July 23, your response concerning current valuation, etc., indicated your interest and experience with U.S. companies (earlier Fireye and others), will you be putting out a list of U.S. stocks - I currently hold only U.S. ETFs and would prefer individual stocks -thanks as always.

Q: Can you clarify what the effects are and what you expect they will be on a mostly Canadian portfolio given that the U.S. interest rate is expected to increase soon and that the Canadian rates have just been decreased. I was expecting Canadian dividend stocks to strengthen given a lower interest rate here, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Certainly utilities like IPL and ENB are weakening (but perhaps that's more to do with the perception of them as energy stocks). Other Canadian dividend paying companies also seem to be weaker, such as banks. Does the U.S. interest rate always have the strongest effect on Canadian stocks, no matter that the Can interest rate goes in the opposite direction ?
