Q: Re the recent drop, there is concern that the new government in Alberta may phase out coal by 2020. Capital Power's coal plants will last at least 10 years longer so this would be a significant hit to the value of their capital. addition: On my earlier question,I stated that the NDP platform favored closing coal plants in 2020 - it should have read, 2030. CPX plants are expected to be operational to 2040 - they are in good shape - so if the government follows through it will be a negative and require higher capital spending.

Q: Hello,
I am working on increasing my fixed income allocation by trimming some stocks. I have a number of American stocks in my RRSP with a good profit and I have been thinking about trimming here and buying fixed income. I had thought of selling an buying an American fund equivalent to xsb. Do you think this a reasonable stragegy? I can also buy a large dual listed stock such as RBC in U.S. funds and sell it immediatly with the proceeds ih Canadian, thus avoiding the exchange from us to cdn,in order to buy something like XSB. Buying the fund in US dollars would save a couple of extra transactions, but it would not be in my home currency. If you think buying a US bond index is a reasonable idea, do you have a suggestion as to which?
thanks as always, Claire

Q: Hello,

Since Jason Donville recommended Biosyent (RX) on December 24 I was in on what I perceived was a dip and luckily out again before it dipped another big chunk. Similar thing with Knight (GUD).

My question is whether there is a price point at which either of these become "no brainer" buys? For an investor willing to absorb some risk are we near that point with each stock at $7?

Q: You seem to like BTO as a gold pick, yet I notice that as of the end of April, BTO has one of the largest short positions on the TSX. Why do you think this is the case?

Q: Hi Peter,

I need your advice on the oil and gas stocks in my portfolio. Presently I own Chevron (CVX.US) and Crescent Point (CPG) (4% and 3% of my total portfolio, respectively). I need to sell my Chevron position to pay for upcoming USD expenditures. I was thinking about replacing Chevron with a Canadian company or companies in the energy sector but am struggling with a replacement. What do you suggest? Also, should I increase my exposure to the energy sector at this time? For your information, I have a well-diversified portfolio of 20 individual stocks with about 70% in ‘blue-chip’ companies. Thanks for your help, I have really appreciated your past suggestions.
