Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I would like to add some global exposure to my trading account portfolio. I have short listed 3 ETFs, with XFH and ZEA excluding North America and VXC containing a significant exposure to the US market. I already have exposure to US securities but I would appreciate your perspective on which option may perform best.

Also, would you recommend a hedged or unhedged vehicle at this point.

Recommendations on alternative approaches are also appreciated.

Thank you.

Q: I have a question regarding best strategy for my son's portfolio. He is a 30 year old engineer, who has absolutely no knowledge of investments and no interest in learning about them. I finally convinced him that GIC is a bad place to park his money, so here is the question. How would you structure portfolio for a young person who wants to sleep at night, check his investments once every 3 months, and doesn't have much tolerance to loss? He has 120K to invest (incl. 40K in TFSA). I assume ETFs is a route to go here...? What combination of ETFs you'd suggest?

Q: May I have your updated view of TS.B as an aggressive speculative play? What is your view of their third quarter results? I know it is early, but haw do you think their integration of VerticalScope is going and will it have a positive impact to stop the bleeding?

Q: I currently have no exposure to the health care sector in my portfolio. I'm looking for companies that pay a bit of a dividend which is sustainable and have the ability to provide some steady capital appreciation. I realize that American stocks are not your expertise, but keeping my criteria in mind and watching what's going on with Canadian health care, I would appreciate your opinion on three American companies. Gilead, JNJ, and Walgreens.
Looking to the future, which of these companies has the best prospects? (keeping capital gain and dividend growth in mind)
Which 2 Canadian companies who you add to diversify my health care holdings?
Thanks for your guidance.

Q: Could you give us your view of Keyera's latest earnings. They look like they're out of the park to me but would like your opinion. Also do you foresee a dividend increase in the future with these kind of results. And lastly what is your view on the "mid-stream" sector which has been beaten up quite badly as of late. Keep up the good work! Thanks Scott

Q: Ok, I'm one of those "dummies" who decided on, Aug 5/15, was a great time to take advantage of the drop and purchase a chunk of HLF at $20 (and in a RSP account!) Things aren't turning out what I wished for, with HLF closing today at $11.38 more than a 40% drop, and especially for such a short time. I have about 8 years until retirement, and am in 500 shares. Should I lighten, or hold and hope for the best (which often doesn't work out --- especially with WIN!!!)
Thanks!

Q: When selecting Energy sector names, what 4-5 attributes do you consider to be the most important for a successful investment (eg, cash flow, earnings/share, ROE, analyst upgrades, debt etc)? Of course I'm excluding the actual price of oil which is the overriding factor. Thanks in advance!

Q: Good Morning Team,

I'm thinking of switching some money out of my current financial holdings into FSZ but am not sure if it's a good idea. What I mean is that, while the yield is much better with FSZ, its PE is more or less on a par with the big banks. At present, I have HCG 4.4%, TD 3.3% & RY 1.9%.
I would appreciate your thoughts.
As always, thank you very much.

Q: You've commented many times about pooor management at WIN and the poor ability (communication) of management at AVO.

Given what happened with WIN, am I better off avoiding these companies with weak management, despite what business acumen they may have?

Q: I already own CGI which has finally moved a bit: I was thinking of buying OTEX FPE of 13 - really beat last Q EPS. Being a CDN co. is it listed on the TSX? And, given it's recent results is it a buy - does it's business overlap that of CGI?

Q: I bought half a position today @ $1.84 for the following reason. They have a lot of cash, patents, experience and are divesting what experience tells them to drop. If WIN were a private company with an IPO today, I suspect it would trade north of $5.00. What do you think? (before I buy the other half!) Thanks for the ongoing support.
