Q: Hi 5i: I own some of Student Transportation’s US$ convertible debentures (STB.DB.U: 6.25%, 30 June 2018). The company has just announced they are redeeming them as of September 19, 2016. Is there any downside to waiting for them to be redeemed and being paid out by the company, as opposed to selling them into the market in the meantime? If it is all cash I’d be inclined to wait and accumulate as much of the interest as I can and save the transaction fee. But I wouldn’t want to wait if there is any potential for the company to pay up the debentures in STB common shares instead of cash. Thanks!

Q: What do you think of Clairvest? http://www.clairvest.com/wp-content/uploads/bsk-pdf-manager/Q4_2016_Press_Release_FINAL_53.pdf

It looks like their net income is down about 25% from 2015 yet their book value keeps rising. How do you assess book value on a bunch of privately owned companies? Is it a somewhat subjective?
Just wondering about an investment at some point but since the stock has gone up while net income is down, wondering if it is a good idea.
Or am I reading this wrong?
Thanks

Q: Hi, can you please go over PHO QR...I could be very much wrong but as I go over the release I get the feeling that it is turning into an Avigilon type of story with increased spending on facility and development, management turnover, lower margins and excuses for lower sales. I see both potential and opportunity cost.

I do not have a large position and am unsure if this is worth the headache. I could deploy the money into something better such as new growth portfolio position possibly next week!? Thanks!

Q: I don't own this company (DSG) but it seems to have a pretty good price trend for several years. In particular from Mar2010 to Mar2016 its stock price rose from aprox. 6.3 to 23 or about 265%. Looking at its financials, it reported AEBITDA of .36 in Mar2010 and .80 in 2016 for a total increase over the same period of 122%. That seems odd given the price appreciation. In addition this is a growth rate in per share AEBITDA of only ~14% over the 6 year period resulting in a PEG ratio (using AEBITDA) of ~ 2.41. So my question is: Why is this stock so loved? Yes it has consistent "earnings" but they don't match the stock price appreciation. In their latest annual report they say they have a CAGR of 24% but that is not on a per share basis. So again what am I missing?
Cheers & thanks for the great service.

Q: Gold and gold stocks have been dropping steadily over the last two to three weeks, with many down 10% to 20%. Can you tell us why? Is current or pending US policy a factor here.?

Is it time to sell these stocks before gold drops further? Or is this just a normal "zag" in the continuing upward zig-zag of gold prices? If so, should we hang on a little longer?

Any comments or suggestions will be most appreciated!

Thank you from a nervous "gold-bug"!
