Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: i am concerned that owning pipes and parkland (which I do, for income) is going against growing headwinds, and there is a growing international trend toward cleaner energy, renewable energy, etc. I don't think I need dump all of these now, but at some point, don't you think we should be lightening up. Or is it such a longterm issue I need not worry about it. i want to be ahead of the curve.

If you agree, then what would you recommend instead for income, in the areas of clean energy and renewables?

Q: Hi,

Can you provide your opinion on this close ended fund. Based on the investments within the fund I can't wrap my head around how they get the +8% yield. It appears they use some leverage and possibly part of the yield is return of capital but even if that is correct it seems high. I currently own XTR and it has met my objective of steady income. If you think this will perform similarly I'd be happy. Will invest in this inside an RRSP. Thanks

Q: Hi 5i, I’m trying to understand the price setting dynamics when expressions of interest are sought for an IPO and a price range is indicated instead of a fixed price. E.g. the current Freshii offering indicates a price in the range of $8.50-10.00. What determines the actual price? Why wouldn’t the company and the bankers just pick the top end every time if that is in their best interest? Thanks!

Q: Just curious. There is an alzheimer drug that has been found to repair and rebuild teeth is called "Tideglusib" and it is mfg by a pharma co. called "Zeltia Group" but, they are on the Spanish Madrid exchange symbol "ZEL" with a quote of 4.045 ?.
The question is; how does one buy and sell on these smaller exchanges, how does the currency aspects work and what are the tax implications etc?
Thank you

Q: I was thinking of buying these three stocks for my wife's portfolio (non-registered) - each would be a small position vs the overall size of her portfolio & represent diversification from the big blue chips she owns that pay & increase dividends on a regular basis. As well, they represent industries she currently is not in. All rated a B - so, wonder about risk? Long -term holds.

Q: I've held IGM on DRIP for 25 years (in an RRSP). It comprises 15% of my total market value across all accounts. I also hold CIX and the two comprise 16.6% of my portfolio of 35 stocks. Since IGM's price has firmed up recently with upswing in the market, I'm wondering if now might be the time to trim my exposure a bit. I like the IGM dividend and don't know what I'd replace it with. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Q: I saw a report today that the Republican GOP is planning to introduce a bill to reform (lower) US corporate taxes that includes a so called "border tax" on all imports. Some talking heads have commented that if it becomes law as currently written the US dollar will see a big increase (as much as 25%). Have you heard about this and do you have any comments? Is it time to overweight US holdings to hedge against a currency increase?

Q: I have listed the tech stocks I currently own. As much as I like all of them, I am very over-weight in that sector and need to re-balance my portfolio. I think I should sell 3 of them. Which 3 would you suggest?

Thank you, Peter
