Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I currently own a 3% total portfolio in international markets. I plan to raise my total international exposure to 10% from new money available. Do you think it is safe to do so. My U$ exposure is at 42%. No bonds, 7% in money markets.

I currently own XIN and ZWE for distribution. Is there overlap between VI, XEF and XIN? How would you proceed? Can you rank and propose what my options are among these ETFs with the % you would allocate to each 2 or3 ? I don't want EMs.

Thank you for your precious help. You've made me wonders since I use your services.

Q: Hi 5i!
Piggy backing off one of my last questions on building a solid portfolio from scratch through diversification et al(THANK YOU!). Knowing you can’t get personal; looking for some mid to long term hold recommendations (either US or CA) in the following sectors with growth upside in mind as I have significant cash (250K+) sitting in my RRSP doing nothing. I am currently quite top heavy in Tech – and own the above in registered and non-registered accounts.

If you have several recos for a sector, can you please rank in order of preference. Additionally, if there is a sector that can be put to the side with the idea of prioritizing others, I would be keen to know. Also open to add ETF's to represent a sector. As always, thanks a million. I love your service.

Q: If it were your money, what would be your number one choice for parking a large sum of money ($200,000+) for a 3-8 month period to 1) maximize return, 2) minimize risk and 3) maximize liquidity. Can you please give me just one top choice for CND dollars as well as USD.

There seems to be a few options from reading previous questions but I am getting decision paralysis trying to compare them all, Your commens are most appreciated.

Q: Good Monday Morning,

Just read Gordon Papes article in the Globe regarding oil demand.

What is your general take on the article?

I do not hold any producer stocks but lots of infrastructure equities - for income - ENB, PPL, KEY,, etc.

Should I be concerned and making changes?

Thanks very much.

Q: Hello 5i,

We have a small position of ACLS to sell and add to VRT or SMCI, or open a new position of DRX.

Which stock has your highest conviction today?

Thank you

Q: A comment on Scotialine's handling of NVDA split. I have both Scotia and BMO Investorline accounts and Investorline handled it flawlessly, Scotia did not. Also I recently opened RIFF accounts in each discount broker. Investorline RRIF is active(for 2 weeks now) and the process was smooth. I am still waiting for Scotia's to come online. I'm seriously considering scrapping my Scotia accounts and moving them to another discount broker but don't want everything at Investorline for security reasons. May try Questrade or Simplewealth, not sure yet.

Q: My question is about CreditRiskMonitor (CMRZ) they are solvent from what I can gather but their main competitor Dun & Bradstreet Holdings (DNB) is not, what can you tell me about CMRZ besides it is tightly/majority held by the Flum family?

Q: Good evening,

I was looking to switch brokerages (from TD because of their $10 per trade fee) to a lower fee trading account. I would like a brokerage that offers low fees for trading stocks and options in Canada and the US, will allow me to keep both a US and CAN currency account, and has little or no maintenance fees (or has those fees waived for 5 digit balances or higher). I've looked into a couple of brokerages my favorite being TastyTrades however they aren't available in Canada, Wealthsimple however they charge a fee monthly to maintain a US account, CIBC however they seem to be equivalent to TD except slightly lower fees, Questtrade the price for stocks is good but for options is the equivalent to TD.

Any brokerage recommendations that fit most/all of my requirements?

Thanks,
Aidan

Q: What do you think of airbnb and uber? i use both companies a lot and like them.

Can you give me your thoughts on each in terms of: valuation, growth prospects, how they stack up to peers, and how good the ROE is?

Would you say one is better than the other? I assume they are both pretty GDP sensitive w/how much travel and leisure spending impacts them
