Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I've recently changed jobs and now have access to funds that were previously tied up in a group RRSP. I would like to start building the balanced equity portfolio, and at this point in time believe I have enough cash to buy about half of the portfolio now, with the intention of rounding it out in the new year.

Which 10 or so stocks from the balanced equity portfolio would you recommend starting with at this point in time? I'm in my late 20s so therefore have a long investment horizon.

Thanks in advance.

Q: ONR.UN is to be take private, and if I understand correctly, current shareholders are to receive $4.275 in cash per unit (if they elect to take cash) OR shares of Smart Reit (calculated at $4.20) if they prefer. As Mitch Goldhar owns so much of this stock, I assume the deal will be approved.

Do you have a recommendation as to whether shareholders should (a) sell into the current market at $4.21, (b) keep stock and elect cash or (c) keep stock and choose shares in SmartReit.

Q: Greetings, guys.

Thoughts on Northland Power's earnings? I dont think the earnings report itemized their earnings per share.

If I selected the right numbers and performed the calculations correctly, it looks like they beat eps expectations. Can you verify this for me within your analysis of the earnings report? Lastly, how does their debt profile look?

Thanks again.

Q: As a long time investor I'm gobsmacked that kxs, or zzz gets pummeled for a slight earnings misses. Can you provide some insight here? Kxs has had slight misses before but a growing firm with little or no debt and an Asian clent that re-nigged on them. What gives? Is this some perverse message to management to smarten up. Whzt a buying opportunity.
I feel better now!
