Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: If you had $27,000 in a Canadian rrsp and currently no holdings, what are the top 5 holdings you would buy? What do you think would be a decent purchase price? Would you jump in or stagger the purchases?

Q: On Jan. 22 you wrote, "The 12-month payout ratio is 28%, and PEY is in good financial shape." On Feb. 14 you wrote, "BUT...its nine-month 2023 payout ratio was 101%. Its balance sheet is OK."

I am confused by these seemingly contradictory statements. Can you please clarify regarding the payout ratio and the health of the balance sheet?

It seems as if I am a bit of a sucker for high yields and have been burned by Birchcliff in 2023 (though still a holder), and do not want to suffer the same fate with my recent purchase of Peyto.

Thank you as always for your expertise.

Q: What happened to the forums???? I logged on this evening and headed for the Forums link at the top of the page, and it's no longer there! Maybe a glitch? Logged out, logged back in again - same thing, no Forums!!!!

Q: Greetings — Today, (Feb 14/24) Goldmoney amended the terms of it NCIB to allow the company to purchase more of its own shares, from 592,058 shares to 744,536 shares.

My question: Once the company acquires any given number of its own shares, are those XAU shares cancelled (which could increase EPS) or retained as treasury stock?

Thanks for your fine service.

Q: I need to trim my holding in CRWD. What are the 3 top tech names outside of the mega caps you would consider as a replacement?
Thanks, Hugh

Q: I just sold DXCM and am looking for a replacement in the healthcare sector. I've either owned (ISRG, MASI) or watched (DHR) for years, but currently do not own any of these. From my end, they all look like good choices, which would be your preference and why?

If you've got another recommendation, I'm all ears!

Q: Would appreciate your comments on their just-released quarter financials. Dividend back over 5% after this day's drop. Payout ratio of about 43%. I am wanting to own residential, but have been put off by the low dividends from most. This one is now looking good to me, but do you see any red flags here? Are there any others you might suggest (but please, with a reasonable dividend!)
Thanks!
Paul

Q: I am hearing investors piling into commercial real estate. I am looking for office real estate REITs in Canada that are beaten down, will not go down but have a potential price appreciation when environment improves. I am more looking for capital appreciation and not necessarily dividend.
