Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I am a senior and rely on my dividends for income in a RIF. I would like to know what I should do with ZWE, I own a 4.8% position and I own ZDI 6% position. DO I sell one and combine? I have a balanced income portfolio of 5i approved stocks with a 10% weighting in ZWH. Thanks for all the help, I use you for 99% of my decisions. Great job on the new web sight. Gary

Q: I have owned MAXR/MDA(in my RSP; approx 2.5% of my Portfolio) since 2015 and currently Market Value slightly greater than the Book Cost . I am a long term investor ,however, I am undecided re keeping MAXR or to sell and invest in another stock. Your input would be appreciated. Second question-what two stocks would you recommend regardless of sector/weighting at this time?

Q: Does power metals corp. have a worthwhile deposit in its spodumene lithium area in Ontario. It is stated that spodumene mining results in a purer lithium extraction that is necessary for the small lithium batteries in smartphones and all small appliances. Is this a worthwhile speculation at this time.

Q: I am planning to sell ABX to take a tax loss. However, I like to stay invest in the gold/gold miner sector. I can get my wife to buy back ABX or any of the above companies. I would like your opinion on your preferred investment vehicle in gold/gold miner at this time > any of the above 5 companies? or do you have any other favorite company in this sector ? BTW, can you let me know if I buy ABX in the NYSE, will its dividend qualified for Canadian dividend tax credit ? Thank you.

Q: Two questions: I’ve recently intiated a half position in GSY and hold full positions in TD and BNS. I’m wondering what your take is on the implications for these companies as the new rules for mortgages takes effect Jan 1. Would it be prudent to scale back my bank holdings somewhat and increase my position in alternative lenders? Would you recommend a full position in GSY at this point as some borrowers may have to make a move away from the big banks? I accept GSY is riskier and the government could impact the alternative lending space with regulations.
A second related question, Cannacord is forcasting an 8% decline in mortgage lending for 2018. Your take on the impact for TD and BNS please.
