Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: My favorite stocks are those that go up year after year without a hitch, and have a decent dividend. You appear to favour the same kind, as above. But you have no utilities in your balanced portolio. Would you please contrast the growth rates, dividend growth, stability and safety of the above with regard to why a utility like Algonquin would not fit in nicely?

Q: My partner has $25k to invest in a new TFSA. Was thinking that 5 stocks of $5k each might be a good initial starting point. Do you agree? And could you make suggestions of stocks to add based on a moderately to aggressive approach. Her other investments inside a RRSP are primarily mutual funds or ETF based. Thanks!

Q: 5i. Thanks for heads up on SIA share issue through questions.

While I would like to get into seniors living reit and SIA with discount price seems like a good entry, I do have to sell another reit to do so.

I just picked up TCN (US housing)last week as entry to accumulate over time.
I have held HR (Retail and other) for years.

I like the idea of SIA one day being a take-out and it makes sense.

Would you advocate for a move from one or the other of the aforementioned reits to get into SIA?

Or will they all act similarly into and through 2018?

Thanks
Dave

Q: I am in my late 30's, and I have a long-term time horizon. However, I find myself gravitating towards stocks with stable businesses that pay dividends. I currently own BEP.un, NWH.un, CSH.un, and SLF.
For a long-term, yet somewhat conservative investor, what are some companies that I should consider adding to my portfolio? Thanks in advance!

Q: I am trying to gage if these stocks will surprise us in a positive way let’s say a 6 months to a year from now. In other words I am trying to think ahead of the curve.

-Considering how well Bitcoin has done will hive-tsx.v follow in its footsteps ?

-Solar. No one talks about it so much anymore.  Is this the calm before the storm.  Is this little known stock uge:tsx.v poised to do shout up?

-Is ostk.n  the next eBay ?  Amazon ? Shopify?

-Robotics.  Definitely the way of the future .  Are these 2 eft a good buy ? ( Botz and Robo ) .

Or are there other companies that are strongly recommend today that would appreciate in stock value ?

Thanks so much for your input.

Barry from Montreal.

Q: I presently have an investment made 3 months ago in this U.S. based company. I was attracted by the fact that it was acquired by Enbridge and pays a dividend in excess of 6 %.
What do you think of this company as a longer term investment ? After receiving 1 dividend payment and noting a 40 % withholding tax , I was informed by RBC that since the corporate entity is an LLC , it doesn't qualify for the 15 % withholding tax. I was also informed that the status would not change, even if transferred to my RRSP account. Does this seem accurate from what you know ?i.e. that an LLC does not qualify for a 15 % withholding tax and that if it were held within an RRSP , that it would still be subject to a 40 % withholding tax ?

Q: Another 2 headlines in the Vancouver Sun today.1)B.C.Casinos knowingly accepted banned cash:confidential report. In 2015 River Rock Casino accepted $5.37m(79%)of $6.7m from illegitimate lenders.2)"Nearly all" gamblers with $20s left with other bills(reining)."River Rock does have criteria in place to help prevent refining for the purposes of money laundering,but---the notion that nearly all gamblers were paid out with $100 bills, regardless of the denomination that they brought in with,in part suggests that the controls in place to prevent a patron from refining may not be functioning as intended."These reflect poorly on River Rock & may result in adverse impact.Buy,sell or hold. Thanks

Q: Howdy! The Kiki Delaney chapter in "Market Masters" has inspired me to invest more in Quebec-based equities. I already have BCE, CAE, CNR & GUD. Please rank the top 3 in this list (or other Quebec-based equities that I didn't list) to add right now purely on long-term (3-5 yrs) appreciation (value + dividends).
Thank you,
David L

Q: My first tender offer! TRC Capital Corporation wishes to purchase 3,000,000 shares of OTEX at a share price of $38.50 which represents a discount of slightly less than 5% over the current price. My preliminary research suggests TRC is known to have made a number of these discounted offers. You comment please. Thanks!
