Investment Q&A
Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.
Q: Here are two strategies. I sense that a lot of us are doing 2) but that you would favor 1) am I right? How strongly do you feel about the pros and cons of each.
1) Pick one (or more) of the 5i portfolios and invest your entire nest egg into it. Keep the asset levels in sync with changes you make. Keep doing that for many years no matter what your emotions may tell you.
2) Pick and choose only certain stocks you want to buy looking at the 5i portfolios, also BNN top picks, the "Buy" ratings on your online investment tool, similarly with stocks not in 5i portfolio but that are discussed here in the question section, etc. etc.
P.S. I ask in the context of a basic semi-savvy investor who is no way as knowledgable as any expert, does not have the time or ability to become one, is retired and whose worst-case investment needs are simply to beat inflation over time to preserve purchasing power and deliver an income stream that does not run out before death.

Q: I am considering selling SIA, a much larger senior residence company which I have held for years, and purchasing DR, a smaller medical REIT. This question is based on fundamentals and growth rates. May I have your opinion?
With appreciation.

Q: Hydrogenis has been trending higher of late, although it seems to fall back as fast as it goes up. However this morning it is up over 5%. The only news I can find is that they will announce earnings on Nov. 6th. Would this signify optimism in the earnings report, or could it be that someone knows something we don't? The volume is low. Thank You.
Q: Well, i feel that you are being a little short on your patience with this company, i own many of the company's in the growth portfolio, and feel that you could easily replace 6 to 8 of them with better growth companies, before you dump ZCL, are we just becoming qrt. to qrt. investors now?
Q: what do you think of this company?
what are the numbers/balance sheet look like?....are insiders buying lately and is the placement that they did absorbed?
Would you suggest buying into this?or do you like COV.V better?

I'm thinking of getting some of this stock,
I believe the cannabis industry (for now) will grow over the next few years.
Would you rate TNY a "buy"?

Q: Hello,
Hello 5i. We hold some Bonavista in our modest energy sector holdings. To sell low after buying near its high (currently underwater by $20k) seems crazy, not to mention embarrassing. Yet, I'm mulling selling before end of year and replacing (probably also in energy?). My objective is a more reliable dividend payer to replace it with and one that should also respond well when the energy sector eventually comes back, as it always has. This change would be in our corporate account; please also advise if I'm right in understanding this loss could be carried forward and/or offset gains sold last year. Your thoughts and advice on these two points will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Q: Folks seem a bit impatient with Knight. Do you know of other examples in your careers where a management sat on their cash for a long time waiting for the right deal.
FYI my last question was public but answered as private.
Like the upgrades though.

Q: is this a company that is in the graphite sector , but maybe it should be avoided until it can prove its an actual viable company and not just out to mine the public?
Q: Regarding MDNA I would be cautious. I tried to contact them and was unsuccessful. They have various addresses and phone numbers listed on the web in Van, Cal and Toronto of which none seemed viable. I got no e-mail replies. I tried the number listed on SEDAR and got an message but no return call. A man did answer at one number who said he was an investor but then abruptly hung up on me when I began a conversation. At the moment I think its a scam.

Q: ZST fits my bill for a bond ETF in a rising interest rate market. Only issue is its low volume trades. Can you suggest one or more similar bond ETF that trades heavier? Thank you.
