Q: Hi Peter and Staff
Questions on the merger
- I had a date of later in January 2018 to make an election on what shares to take? Does the now announced target date of January 1,2018 change that?
- is there a default treatment that is consistent amongst institutions?
- aside from the tax deferral element is there a recommendation? Ie will both be traded in Toronto and get the Canadian dividend tax credit ?

Thanks for all you do
Dennis

Q: Hello Team,

I know you guys don't advise on tax questions but as simple as this one is no one seems to give me a straightforward answer. So, I hope you can help. Which of the following is right regarding RRSP contribution year for 2017:
1- 01 January 2017 to 28 February 2018 (14 months)
2- 01 March 2017 to 28 February 2018 (12 months)

According to an HR Block agent, it is option 1. According to a CRA agent it is option 2. I appreciate it if you are able to support your answer with a website reference from CRA?

Merry Christmas and Happy 2018!

Q: Hi 5i team,

I’m thinking of adding ECN to my portfolio. However, I already owned GSY and FSZ. Do you see any overlapping? Which two out of these three names will likely have the best growth in the next few years? Which two out of these three have the better balance sheets? Thanks and all the best for the new year.

Q: HCG recently announced leadership appointments such as New CIO, SVP Underwriting and SVP Human Resources. Looks like they are building a long-term strategic team to lay the foundation for growth and managing operations effectively.
In this context how does 5i view the developments.
Two key questions here.
1) What would you recommend for existing investors and what advise would you give for new investors looking at making a stock purchase
2) What impact can we expect in the next couple of quarters or say year 2018 in terms of earnings and business outlook? Will the new appointments and personnel costs have significant impact on earnings in near term?

Q: Has anything changed your view on a long term hold on TRI for a 4% position in a dividend portfolio? A technical analyst recently recommended a sell. I could use the 10% loss for tax selling purpose, as your advice has given me substantial gains ,thankyou. I have not bought Your top pick of ECN yet. Would that be a good substitute?

Q: Firstly, JET Canada Jetlines getting ready to launch June 2018. A ultra low-cost airline. I know lots of others tried and failed. But sounds like they are starting small, experienced Team, interesting 5 year growth plan and working out of smaller airports. They say fly for the price of jeans. Are looking for international investors. Everyone looking for a deal. This could be the one that Survives and succeeds. Stock has doubled in last week. Your thoughts.

Secondly, Vertical Farming. Your thoughts on investing in this area.
Are there are any companies presently listed on the the stock market.
With global climate change I truly believe this will be the way
Of the future.

Happy New Year to Team 5i.
Best Wishes for 2018.

Q: First of all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the 5i team and all my fellow subscribers.

My question relates to where should I invest (RRSP vs TFSA vs Non Registered).

I am 53 yrs old and plan to retire in the next 12 yrs. My current investment portfolio is virtually 100% in RRSPs. My goal is to build a strong dividend portfolio of Canadian stocks coupled with an International and Bond ETF. My question is where should I keep my investments? RRSP? TFSA? or Non Registered?

I am entering my peak earning years and feel that I can retire comfortably on approx. 70% of my current income. I see potential benefits in all 3 but not sure where I should keep my investments. I will likely be at a lower tax rate than I am now than when I am ready to withdrawal from my RRSP. However, who knows what will happen with tax rates. As well, income from my RRSP (but not my TFSA) would impact my OAS clawback.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Q: When companies are spun out as VMD was from PHM it takes several days for the changes to appear in a trading account (Neither PHM nor VMD appear in my account, just a "placeholder"(?)). In a situation like this can we typically trade our shares even though they do not appear in the account?

Royal Circle has a "more than one hour" wait at the moment.

(You list the name as Viamed but others list as Viemed).

Q: Hi Peter,
Any idea why Covalon is not trading today based on yahoo and google stock listings? Also, is there a specific reason for Canopy to be surging so high today as I have not seen any new news release to account for such a spike? Thanks and again appreciate the input.
