Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: I own the shares and the bond units. I do not subscribe to the theory to hold an equity even though its falling, because you 'get paid to wait'. In certain instances you can wait forever to get back the capital losses.

So with that parameter out of the way, what is your future investment outlook for H given what has occurred today and the meddling that will occur in the future (your guess is better than mine)?

There are many income stocks to chose from, look at it from the capital preservation/downside approach.

Thanks

Sheldon

Q: Thank you in advance for your enlightened advice. Which seem to you the best investments. I am looking for a dividend in a non-registered account as well as growth for a term of 2 to 3 years. The weighting of my interest is 30% towards the dividend and 70% towards the growth. The companies I am looking at are:
AFN, BNS, CM, BIP.UN, CHR, ENB, EIF, FRU, MAXR, SMU.UN
Could you rank them in terms of preference and write down the ones you would avoid. Sector weighting is not a criteria.

thank you very much

Q: Good morning 5i team
I am a retired, conservative investor who recently reduced the equity portion of our portfolio to raise cash for possible market "opportunities". Our largest equity holdings are TD, BNS, ENB, EMA and BCE. Thanks to 5i, we also hold SIS, NFI, BEP.UN and GUD. If we get a significant market sell-off, would you please recommend 3 or 4 stocks that have a good competitive advantage, modest debt and good growth potential. Thank you for your advice. Edward

Q: Hi 5i & team,
Thank you for your opinions in the past with our grandsons RESP. ( age 4 ). The current holdings in his account are: ATD.B, CXI, DSG, KXS, GUD, NFI, PBH, and TOY. We held Amaya gaming and sold with a very good return. We’re thinking of purchasing The Stars Group now, but would have to sell something as there is very little cash in the account. In your opinion what is your pick to sell in order to top up the cash balance?
Thank you

Q: My wife and I are looking for growth and have a high tolerance for risk in our TFSA accounts. We have full positions in SHOP, TSGI, KXS, GSY, SIS, PHO, PBH, COV and half positions in RHT, WCP, GC and GUD. These will remain long term holds as long as there’s no material change in any company. We’re considering CSU and TOY. Could you comment on purchasing these at today’s prices and indicate potential future headwinds (China dispute on TOY). As a second question do you have any other suggestions that look particularly interesting to you today? Thanks for your incredibly valuable service.

Q: Hello,
As per Morningstar’s equity style box the 5i portfolio stocks fall under following categories.
BE:- Large = 8, medium = 9 , small = 9,
value = 5, blend = 5, growth = 16
Inc:- Large = 4, Medium = 4, small = 11,
value = 9, blend =6, growth = 4
Is that the strategy you have implemented for the 5i portfolios. Are the classifications accurate in terms of value, blend and growth.

Thanks for all the good work

Q: Hi Peter/Ryan,

I am currently invested in various etfs under my wife and my registered accounts.
1) I would like to make BE portfolio as my core portfolio with about 20 stocks in it. Which stocks should I exclude and also please recommend 5 to 10 stocks from the Income portfolio
2) Should I split the portfolio holdings between my wife and my registered accounts to reduce the transaction costs or it is a good strategy to keep the same holdings as a separate portfolio in our accounts. We have an investment timeframe of 15+ years.

Thanks

Q: Hello
I just read about the tariffs applied to P&G more specifically the toilet paper they sell here in Canada.

I assume that if P&G up the price of Charmen TP in Canada then KPT will follow and hike the price of its Casmere TP. Thus increasing their margins.

Do you think this development is ''material''for KPT?

Thanks
Stephane

Q: Today Gsy had a press release that indicated it was going to issue more unsecured debt for corporate purposes..
It also released a hint of what its earnings release on August 7 will contain.
Positive numbers.
The stock moved up 2 dollars
Question: is it common for a company to issue a " hint" of its earnings almost a month prior to the official release .i have only seen this before when a company was under a short attack

Q: As a follow-up to Larry's question on July 10, which pre-supposed my own, I had one more point: I am looking for two companies which will need to be cashed out in 2 years. Do these two fit the bill, or would you recommend something else? Just looking for growth. Dividend not important. Feel free to suggest two others which might have more bang for the bucks. Sectors not important, as I'm well-diversified and comfortable with present portfolio, thanks to 5I of course. : )

These two new positions would be "mad money" undertakings. Thanks.

Q: I know that these 3 are intimately linked. I am wondering the advantages and disadvantages of each. As far as dividends and dividend growth, they rank PWF, POW, GWO (decreasing).

I am trying to chose one, but unsure which is better. Could you please outline the pros and cons of each?
