Q: Tax loss selling

Would you please clarify the 30 day wait period before repurchasing shares sold for tax loss purchases. I sold shares on Aug 31 which closed on Sept. 5. Which day can I buy them back? Thanks for your great service.

Q: Hi Peter/Ryan,

I was holding off buying MG and NFI because of NAFTA disagreements. Now that it is a done deal is it a good time to buy these stocks or future recession may have a bigger impact on the auto sector. They are trading close to 52 week low. Magna has dropped by almost $10 since July.
Appreciate your advice.

Thanks

Q: I've been a long time (over 10 years) owner of NLY and have added to the position several times. I'm considering adding to it again. The dividend is very high but they seem able to handle it. I had thought they would benefit from rising interest rates in the states but they seemed unaffected as the rates rose. My adviser says that it likely doesn't appreciate in price due to the fact that many investors just don't understand their business. I would be happy if all I ever made on this was the current dividend.
Do you have any insight here?

Q: I am retired and try to have a portfolio that pays me a dividend, is relatively safe and shows a little growth. My portfolio is primarily made up of banks, pipelines, telecoms and utilities. I own these listed utilities but am wondering if I have too much overlap. If you were to recommend selling one of them, which one would it be ?

Q: I'm in the process of trimming my portfolio of over 40 companies and building cash. Both Major Drilling Grp and Cathedral Energy Services are candidates for removal. How do you feel about these companies, should they be sold? Would you put the money in cash or what would you buy in their place, in the same sectors?

Many Thanks

Q: There was a discussion on a financial network with a portfolio manager regarding future rate increases. The expectation is that rates will likely be increased 3 to 4 times over the next 15 months or so. This in turn would likely result in an inverted yield curve. In such an environment, financial stocks, especially insurance companies, have historically done very poorly. So not hold them.!
My questions are
What is your expectation for future interest rate increases this year and next?
Do you agree with how 3-4 rate increases would likely affect the yield curve?
From you experience, historically, has this type of scenario been quite negative for financial stocks; that is banks and insurance companies?
And if this is very negative for financial stocks, should one continue to hold such shares beyond the end of this year?
Your analysis please. Thanks.

Q: A U.S. based financial advisor who specializes in ETF’s and is bearish on the market states in his weekly newsletter that a retired individual should hold an equivalent percentage of bonds as their age in their portfolio:

What would be your thoughts on this degree of allocation and what would you suggest?

Would your allocation change if the individual has already accumulated sufficient capital to take them to the end and still leave a nice inheritance?

If you do think that a retiree should have a percentage of bonds in their portfolio can you provide some ETF’s?

Thank you for considering my questions.

Q: HI 5i,

Concerning American banking system, rumors are that under the Trump governance, some banks have gone back to the same financial strategies as before the financial crisis of 2008. I do have those 3 American bank in my retirement portfolio. Should I get a ride of those and, if the answer is yes, any suggestion for replacement.

Thanks you
