Q: Hi Peter/Ryan,

I would like to get your opinion on TDF(Templeton Dragon Fund) a closed end fund yielding 8.4%. Bill Gates recently disclosed a 5% position in TDF. About 80% of TDF investments are in Chinese FANG stocks which are at a good valuation currently. What are your thoughts about TDF and are there any disadvantages of investing in a CEF. There could be further correction in chinese stock markets because of the trade war. Is this the right time to invest in emerging/chinese markets and which alternate ETF would you recommend.

Appreciate your expertise
Thanks

Q: As I understand it, the ECI buyout by BIP.UN gives ECI shareholders the options of: 1. $29 cash per shares ("cash option"), and 2. BIP.UN units on a prorated basis + balance in cash ("combo option"). ECI shareholders, by default (those making no election), will get the cash option. Simple enough.

Do you know the timing of such election? Some friends of mine claim to have received both the voting and election materials, while I only received the voting info. I couldn't get through to the company for clarification. I don't want to be forced to accept the cash option (due to tax considerations).

Would you by any chance know more about the timing of the voting and election processes in this buyout? Thanks.

Q: can you explain CEFs in a simple staight forward way? I noticed that some have significantly higher fees than none CEFs. What is driving this? Are there tax implications for a canadian holding a CEF in either a registered or non-registered account. i also notice some issue K-1s and some issue 1099s. What the heck is the difference and how does this impact me as a Canadian investor. If you could also point me to a resource that would be fantastic!

Q: There have been no questions about this company in a year.
And the two most recent, elicited more-or-less opposite responses.
Could you provide a current opinion, when the dividend was last cut or increased and what the current short position is.
If you like something better, I would be interested to know.
Thanks,
Kyle

Q: I'm tempted to buy more ALA and am trying to confirm that ALA dividend will still be well covered after all the divestitures. Do you have details on the free cash flow of WGL (pre-acquisition) and ALA currently? I found cash from ops but not a breakdown of cap exp for maintenance versus growth). Also, any idea how much free cash flow is being lost by ALA as a result of the divestitures?

Thanks
Peter

Q: I own shares in ENF and not sure about selling them at a profit or taking up ENB's offer for 0.45 per share cash plus 0.735 shares in ENB. This morning it looks like I would be ahead a little by selling ENF.

thanks for comments

Q: I have recently taken over managing a 401K that is comprised of many ETFs. I have never owned an ETF prior but am wondering if this setup is reasonable. It feels like too many ETFs with a fair bit of overlap. Currently equal weights of: XLV, XLI, XLY, XLK, XLRE, XLU, XLP, XLF, XLC, XLE. Your thoughts - some of these the fees are a bit high as well!
