Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: RBC has down graded ABX mostly because of concerns with the Acacia mine in Tanzania. I would like to increase my investment in ABX, as I think the market may be turning to the gold sector for safety in these turbulent times. How concerned should I be about the RBC report? Do you agree? In past comments you have favoured/suggested alternative gold companies, do you have a preference today? ABX is my only gold holding...………..Thankyou, Lionel

Q: I currently hold CAR.UN, AP.UN, AX.UN, KMP.UN, and NWH.UN and would like to purchase CHP.UN. I'm always happy to reduce the number of holding I have so which one or two or three would you sell to make room for CHP.UN? Income is my main focus.
Thanks for your continued guidance.

Q: My question is on the US pot producers who trade on the CSE. I have seen earnings projections for 2019 and 2020 that seem quite reasonable (as low as 4x EV/ebitda) for growth stocks and much lower than their Canadian peers. Some are already ebitda positive. Also this market would appear to be much larger than the Canadian market even without complete recreational legalization. I would love to hear your opinion on the US market for pot and these producers in particular.(cura, Harv, CL).
I realize this is not your favourite sector and these stocks perhaps do not screen on your universe of stocks.
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Q: I hold some 5 year rate reset preferred shares series A from Element Fleet Management (EFN.PR.A) which will reset to 6.933% on Dec 31, 2018. They also carry a conversion privilege to convert to series B floating rate preferreds (3 month T-Bill + 4.71%) which will be 6.444% for the first 3 month period in 2019. Given your outlook for interest rates going forward, would you advise converting? In addition I cannot find the ticker symbol to get a quote for the series B preferreds. Do you know the ticker symbol?

Q: I see dramatic price declines for most equities in this portfolio. I have never seen a report to sell them or reduce...just the fundamentals are OK ... don't worry. I find there is a repricing going on where PE's used to be 15-25 are now falling to 10-15.
A constant buy thesis based on Company earning fundamentals does not take the PE revaluation into account. Your thoughts?

Q: I am a long time subscriber to 5i and long time follower of BNN and one of BNN's best, David Driscoll, mentioned that he could see another 16% down-side on the S & P. Also, awhile back John Zechner mentioned that there are stocks that are like melting ice cubes. Sell them before they are gone. Your opinion? I was always under the understanding that it is one credit per question. Please clarify this. Thank you. Dennis

Q: Re: Growth vs Value in market downturn

How do growth stocks tend to perform during market downturns vs value stocks? Does one need to hold a bit of both? If one holds stocks of good companies but have premium valuations..what does one do in a downturn..wait for markets to pick up and do nothing? This is essentially what I am doing. Thank you.

Regards,

Shyam
