Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi team,

How do you feel about Alaris Royalty these days, specifically wrt their most recent Q4 and year end results?
Earnings certainly looked pretty good! Do you feel they are sustainable going forward?
How does their stated 'outlook' read to you?
Is the pain of the past 2-3 years behind them now?
They have an unusually high yield and I realize this does add some risk when the yield is above 5% but perhaps they have finally turned the corner.

As always, appreciate your insight!

Cheers,
Steve

Q: I have considerable taxable gains that will be realized this year. I will earn less than 20k in self employment income this year (semi-retired). I am considering buying 3000 shares of STLC before the special dividend recognizing the share price will drop after ex-dividend. I will sell the shares shortly after ex-dividend date. I will receive $3690 in dividends and have a similar capital loss (which I will use to reduce my capital gains). Do you consider this a tax efficient strategy? Am I missing something? Thanks for your advice. Rob

Q: These 2 are laggards in my portfolio. PBH down 22%. SIS up 7%. They both hit my mental trailing stop of over 25%. Do you see any near term catalyst for them? While I am an investor and not a trader, if they are likely going to be "dead money" for another year, I probably like to sell and move on. What do you think? Would you also suggest replacements for them? They are in my TFSA account. Thanks again for all your valuable advice.

Q: Hi, wrt the recent earnings question on DSG, was your answer for Q4 or full year?
(Brian did not ask for which reporting period, so I will. :))

I ask as your answer seemed out of line wrt their 3Q numbers...ie Earnings per share on a diluted basis of $0.10, up 25% from $0.08 in Q3FY18 and compared to $0.11 in Q2FY19 (from their Q3 release).
You indicated EPS=.32 (that's a huge increase from .10!)

Your reply also differed quite a bit from their stated Q4 and full year earnings release of the prior year.
To clarify, can you please give earnings estimates for both Q4 and full year .

Cheers,
Steve

Q: Hi,

After earnings from both of these companies, would you add to tsgi? I am down 20% on tsgi and position is now .75% in portfolio, would you be comfortably topping back to 1.5-2%? would you initiate a new position in GC here? Would you own both companies or just choose one? Thanks!

Q: From your previous advice to other members, I am aware that these securities are best held in RRSP/RIF accounts for tax purposes. My question is whether the same advice applies to each company/partnership for their Canadian dollar preference shares? Are the dividends impacted by withholding taxes and are the shares eligible for the Canadian dividend tax credit.

Thanks

Q: I often read the expression "Markets Wrap". What does this mean?

Many thanks, Peter
