Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: XMF.PR.B is a preferred split share fund from Quadravest. It invests solely in shares of Manulife . The fund sells at about $5.10 and pays a 7.3% dividend monthly. My understanding is that it has never missed paying the dividend in over 10 years. The fund guarantees to buy back your share at $5.00 on the anniversary date, which is December 1st 2024. It would appear to have bond like characteristics with a high payout. Your input would be appreciated.

Q: Is there an overly compelling reason to own CCL.b today? Its missed earnings 4 out of the last 6 reports and in conjunction with its earnings misses the shares have topped out at $67 a few times since June 2017.

With its current earnings estimates, $2.85 in 2019 and $3.09, in 2020, against the backdrop of probability, how likely do you think CCL.b shares see a 10% increase within the next 12 months?

Thanks again.

Q: Further to Thomas’ question about putting two non-registered accounts into one, aside from the deemed disposition issue, for tax purposes, this is generally not a good idea. The first person listed on a joint account is generally deemed to be the ‘lead’ on the account, and all T5s and associated tax receipts are only issued to the lead person.

So instead of splitting taxes between 2 people, once assets are joined in one account, all taxes - and corresponding increased tax rates - will most likely be borne by the one individual.
Just another aspect to consider before combining assets together.

Q: i am curious about this,i know shopify and constellation software are 2 of your favorite companies, i also know you like open text and cgi, so these 4 companies represent 82% of the xit with shop and csu representing 51%, why not just recommend the xit to your investor, still lots of risk but less so and you get them all plus smaller amount of kxs and some others.dave

Q: Market Outlook

I realize that I am asking for an opinion and will take it that way.

I have some cash that could be invested, but am not sure when to buy in. (financial sector is what interests me the most.)

Based on your decades of experience how would you decide on when the present down ward slide is near bottom. Please provide your top 5 indicators that there is "blood in the street" and could be a time for buying.

thanks

Ernie
