Q: This is a follow up re: Derek's question on 8/16 for a list of Cdn dividend/distribution paying companies with substantial foreign ops. I have followed this strategy for sometime and developed my holdings by researching company filings and presentations. I hold he following companies which I believe have substantial foreign ops (revenues/assets/income of at least about 50% - some alot more) BIP.UN,ENB,AQN,BEP.UN,FTS,BPY.UN,GRT.UN,TCN,SLF,MFC,MG
Also - TRP,BNS,GWO and NTR have good sized foreign ops (less than 50% but still significant)
A good place to look for this company information is the segmented information note to the annual financial statements as well as company investor presentations. In some cases profits are not disclosed by geography and you need to look for proxies such as geographic revenues or assets or operational information.

Q: Which of your balanced or income portfolio companies offer the best buy opportunities this week. Have about 1.5 positions of cash available so 2ultimate buy or a bunch of partial. Short term opportunity with a long term view 5+ years. Starting to shift away from value/growth to more income focus. Can also hold the cash a bit longer but feel that now is a good time to get in on a few solid names even if things continue to be volatile.

Q: Whenever someone asks about parking money safely for a short period (ie up to a year), you always suggest GICs or Treasuries. There are many high interest savings accounts that pay more than these options and are CDIC backed up to $100k or, in the case of Manitoba locales, backed by the province with no limit. And they are completely flexible on term. You can move money in and out at will. Some names to look at are Motive Financial, Achieva and EQ Bank. To conclude, high interest savings should be part of your stock response to questions about parking money safely.

Q: Hi team,
I know your focus is small/mid cap Canada and mine is mid/large cap U.S, so I try not to ask U.S. questions during peak Canadian earnings season, which has now passed.

On Friday afternoon, my tech watch list was fully green. Then PANW went red and redder. I knew something was up (or down). In a half hour, PANW was down almost $20. Finally Seeking Alpha had something on the wire. The Executive VP for worldwide sales at PANW is leaving at the end of September. No reasons given. In the past, when VPs of Finance leave companies abruptly, it may cast some doubt on the financials. I am not sure if a VP Sales departure is a likely sign of a revenue problem or not. I suspect the departure news may have leaked out before earnings on September 4 and PANW had to confirm it. If so, it may now be baked into the price.

What are your current thoughts on PANW and buying now?

Thanks again.

Q: Two questions:
1) Of the two, which one would you be more optimistic about for the medium term (3-5 yrs).
2) Which would you prefer to sell for a tax loss. (and not repurchase)

And a third question...
Regarding TSGI, the last report (06/18)had upgraded the rating to an A-. It has been a while...is it safe to assume that an updated report would see a downgrade?

Thanks.

Q: Can you advise if any of the REITs you would be favourable on have distributions that the dividend tax credit applies to? Thanks. Bill.

Q: I owned this one a fair bit ago and sold at $22.00 because it was not a huge dividend grower even though they do have special dividends from time to time. I was thinking of buying again at current price; however, concerned about business: know they have their own brands; but, licence agreements to distribute for other companies. How solid are these agreements? Of course, the other issue is trading volume - but, can live with that - buy a small position of 3 to 4K shs.

Q: Regarding your earlier response concerning rate reset preferred shares with a minimum reset of 5% (ALA.PR.I, BPO.PR.C, BPO.PR.E, ENB.PF.I, PPL.PR.K, BIP.PR.B), what is the tax implications of the Brookfield ones noted above? Is it foreign income? Are they treated as eligible dividends? Any withholding tax from a U.S. partnership that cannot be recovered would impact the advertised yields. Thanks!
