Q: Good morning
I own CPD which has trended downwards in price over the last year and is now yielding 6.9%. I am considering selling CPD for tax losses and if so, what would be a more sensible strategy. Buy back into CPD after the appropriate delay or Buy something else like a blue chip equity. I know the legal difference between preferred and common but it seems that over an extended buy and hold, commons will prevail albeit with dips along the way. In reality how often are preferred rights called into play to the detriment of common with Canadian blue chips? To me, preferreds offer the worst of both worlds. At this point, my CPD shares are part of my fixed income side and a switch to equities will rebalance things, I know.

Q: Do you have a preference in the Brookfield prefered? I think there are about 12 listed. Please provide the best 2, based on risk and reward.
Q: I am wondering what effect , if any, the reorganisation of Seaspan will have on this pref. Thanks
Q: Seasons Greetings 5i - I have held this TransAlta preferred for a number of years in my RRSP and I'm thinking its time to sell and reinvest elsewhere as I don't see a rebound on the horizon. It represents 1.5% of my portfolio. Portfolio analytics is suggesting I reduce my CDN holdings and increase US (3%) and INTL (15%). My investment strategy as a retiree is largely to invest in companies with track record of increasing dividends and earnings. PA also suggests I reduce exposure to financials, energy and utilities; and increase consumer defensive, healthcare, industrials and communications. I'd appreciate your thoughts on selling and where to invest. At present, I have a 3.4% position in VIS and limited healthcare in TFSA with VHT (0.5%) and UNH (0.4%). Or maybe I just add to my Algonquin position which is 2.3% and retain a decent yield? Thanks for the advice and your help this past year.

Q: Good Morning.
I like the momentum and your positive comments on XBC. In an effort to establish a position in XBC I can add new money to an unregistered account or sell DOL and COV in my TFSA or TSGI and CLIQ in my RRSP.
This may be a too specific question with regards to my portfolio so in the alternative do you have more conviction in XBC than the other for companies at present?
Thank you

Q: My bank is the Royal and, when I buy a GIC through Direct Investing, they list several institutions offering such fixed income at the rate those institutions currently offer. However, if I go directly into the website of these other institutions, I find the rates they offer are slightly higher than what is available through Direct Investing at the Royal. My question is this..... Is the Royal taking a "finders fee" or "management fee" when I purchase a GIC from another institution through their Direct Investing? I hope I have described this situation in a clear manner for your consideration. When I get my annual year-end tax reports from the Royal, they do list an obscure "management fee" against my GIC portfolio. Thanks!

Q: Greetings! I have a small gain on NVS. It seems to me it does not move anywhere. Is it worth holding or I should take the small profit and move on. Thank you.

Q: I own 2 small cap (110M and 12M market cap) stocks in my TFSA and RRSP accounts that have been dogs to say the least. I am down about $8000 total.
My question: I cannot claim the capital loss, so is it better to hold on and hope for the best, or just to sell and forget about them? They are currently worth around $1800.
Thanks

Q: I am building small trust accounts for each grandchild that hopefully will get them interested and informed in the market.
Can you comment on current holdings and suggest 2 or 3 additional stocks?
Criteria: Canadian, dividend-paying, relatively stable but with growth potential?
Many thanks for your great service.

Q: I will probably be purchasing ZIN shortly. Regarding the quarterly dividend, does it matter when I buy ZIN? I know the Ex div date is Dec 27, so I need to buy it before that, so it settles prior to or on Dec 26. And theoretically in an efficient market, the price of ZIN will drop the amount of the dividend ($0.13) on that date. What's your experience...does the ETF share price drop actually resemble the dividend amount?
Thanks...Steve

I am thinking of buying Couche Tarde in my TFSA. Should I buy now or wait for a pull back?

I would appreciate a link for some info on growth, value and momentum strategies.
For a long time-frame investment with high-risk tolerance, which one is more suitable?

Q: I’m looking at a more concentrated portfolio. Thinking of selling Stella Jones and adding to my existing position in ATD.A. Do you see more growth in ATD.A over the next 5 years?
Q: In reviewing Meg press release on their 2020 Capital investment plan if ones assumes a $60 WTI, 94,000 bbl/day (the low end of guidance), a Operating plus G&A cost of $6.75 (the high end of guidance) less $250 Million of capital expenditures leaves free cash flow of approximately $1.57 Billion of which they plan to apply to debt reduction. Debt was at $3.257 Billion at Sep 30, 2019. Is this too good to be true? Am I missing something? Thanks
