Q: I think the market is too complacent of the effects of the coronavirus. China is arguably the largest industrial manufacturer in the world and it has been all but shut down for the past month. I spoke to a friend whose company has a factory in China and event though it is not near the province where the virus has started, the factory is at low productivity because of worker fear and reliance on parts from other factories that are directly effected. If this were happening in North America, the markets would have sold off.

Q: What would you include in a "hard asset" strategy to offset global currency devaluation? Obviously gold is a hedge, but what other sectors would you include - metals, materials (all commodities?), REITs, real estate, infrastructure holdings, maybe even utillities? Please include a few names to consider. Thanks.

Q: Hi 5iR, InterRent real estate appears to me to be a low profile property owner and developer with about 8000 suite located in Ontario and Quebec. The stock price is currently $17.00 and the company yields a very modest, 1.8%. If I had bought IIP in 2015, when it traded at $5.00 I would now be up 240%. The 5yr graph is any investors dream, slow and steady, constantly moving up with almost zero volatility. I like what I see and read about this company.
What am I missing here??? Thanks Team. Cheers, Chris

Q: Hi 5iR team, Many brokerage houses start each New Year by attempting to consolidate their best stock ideas for the year in a comprehensive list.....their Conviction List. I'm wondering if I may ask 51R to do the same? If I was to canvas the 5iR Staff stock experts what would the majority agree on to be your best 5 stock ideas, give or take a few, for 2020? Thanks team. Chris

Q: Hello Peter,
If the US economy hypothetically grows closer to 3 percent as forecasted by Trump; which sectors would lead the way in your opinion?
Also, the Canadian economy should also experience a tailwind. How would you suggest the portfolio could be adjusted?
Any pointers to specific stocks both here and south that one could look at?
Regards.

Q: I need to increase my Cons Disc and my Real Estate allocations. I currently hold GC and DRA.UN. Do you have any other suggestions of a Balanced Equity nature for each sector. Risk is not a concern.

Thank You for your great service

Q: These companies represent 17% of my portfolio, with ENB and NPI positions being 3.5% each and the remaining approx 2 % each. Recently stock prices of several of these have increased 10 % or so.

Should I adjust any of these positions?

Without really knowing the remainder of my account, what percent in utilties would be suitable for a ten year horizon?

Q: Dear Sirs,
I posed a question recently regarding the new issuance of debt by Great Canadian Gaming ( 5 1/4% Dec/2026) and was directed to the archive. I have found commentary on the company, but nothing specific to this debt issuance and your view of this particular instrument as an investment. Your analysis would be most appreciated.

With thanks.

Q: Another solution for Kyle is to give trading authority on that account to a Canadian resident before leaving the country. The Canadian can then place orders via telephone still at a discount rate. That is the practice at one major brokerage; I have found that practices and rules can vary widely even among major brokerages.
