Q: Questions on Canadian Tire:
Does 5i feel CTC's Finance arm's lending criteria exposes it to significant losses (and a surprise to the market) in the current environment? Based on your view of the lending side of the business, does 5i feel the Finance arm supports or detracts from an investment in Canadian Tire at this time?
Finally, how strong does 5i view CTC's web presence, and its competitive position digitally versus strong competitors like Amazon?
Thank you
Edward

Q: I am trying to understand how a payroll tax cut rumour can spark a potential bounce in the market and if a big bounce (should it happen) is just an artificial bounce or something to take seriously? To me it would seem that coronavirus is only just beginning to be felt in North America and that rate cuts and tax cuts can't change the impact of fear and potential shut downs. My question is do you think the market has fully priced in the impact of coronavirus on the economy or has it just reacted to the headlines with another probable leg down when earnings are dented?

Q: For investors with high level of cash and based on current information available, how would you deploy capital going forward?

If we experience another big drop in the coming days, would you advise waiting for more stability. I did buy stocks today but remembered that I bought in too early in the last downturn.

Thank you for the special report today. Much appreciated.

Q: Many thanks for your latest Market Update and Special Report! They are excellent and very helpful.

Please continue to do more in the future. Actually, if it's not a big burden on your time, I would suggest to do a Market Update and/or Special Report at the start/end of each week, or on "as-needed" basis during the time of these very turbulent markets.

Thank you for being here for us!

Q: A grim day today on the market.
BUT ...as I wind down the day do so with a smile.

I wish THIS (situation....see below) would happen to me more often:

I have fortunately owned ZM for a while.
After a down day recently I decided to add to ZM.

Inadvertently I bought ZOOM .... at about $3.50.... and it closed at just under $8.00 today. ( what a dunderhead - me.... lucky dunderhead.... and what a “fun” problem given all the ugliness in the market ).

I have of course investigated my good fortune here ... but am still unsure “why” ZOOM continues to zoom ( up).

Can you enlighten me?

Thanks.

PS outstanding work on 5i’s part with today’s communiques.

Like many others I have followed Peter’s picks and market musings for about 20 years; and am grateful for having done so.

But now we have Peter plus the whole 5i Team.
Talk about leveraging and multiplying talent ....and for the greater good - including the Charity activity.

Lucky us :)

Bravo, 5i.

Q: Good Evening
I own both IPL and PPL
I understand that the drop in oil prices is causing stocks like Vermillion and Whitecap to plummet. However, I am very surprised with the 23% drop in IPL, and PPL.
Can you please provide some explanation as to why there was such a huge drop in the prices of IPL and PPL today? After all these companies are not oil producers.
I will also appreciate it if you could provide some insight whether it is now time to average down on IPL and PPL , hold them or sell them.
I will appreciate your comments. Please deduct two credits.

Q: Hi Team! Just a general question on current market conditions. While all financial experts are saying to stay put and stay on course and not sell into this current frenzy (which i agree) who is selling and causing the massive sell-off then. I Thank-you in advance, Sam.

Q: Hi 5i team,

I have never been an oil guy or a commodities guy for that matter. However, I don’t fully get this latest oil plunge impact on the markets, other than the scare factor. I generally thought lower oil prices were beneficial for the economy. It lowers the cost of transportation for people and freight movers. It puts disposable income into the pockets of the consumer. So, is it more psychological than anything, being a further scare in scary times?

As a side note, I think Eric Nuttall must have the toughest job in Canada. I don’t watch much BNN anymore but I did happen to see a bit of Eric on Friday. Is he the last standing oil bull in the country? He continues to just gush over all the opportunities out there on mispriced assets and cash flows. Maybe the reality is that fossil fuels are in a long-term secular decline and no one cares how underpriced they are. Millennials are more in tune with climate change than trying to catch a bid on an oil stock. I think it may be time for Eric to move to renewables.

Thanks again.
Dave
