Q: Hi,
MAL just announced a share repurchase program. Given the present environment, especially the end customers for most of their products are airlines, is this wise move? Do they have the balance sheet strength for this?
I know the share price has taken a beating this year but seems odd timing for this.
What would be your current rating for the stock (Sell, Hold, Buy)?
Thanks,
Dan

Q: Hello Peter,
One of your fellow FP columnists suggests that the valuation gap between expensive (e.g., tech/growth) and cheaper stocks has never been greater. So while growth managers have been doing well, their upside may be limited. And value managers, while their patience continues to be tested, may have their day (soon). For those of us putting new money into the markets, your views on the above are appreciated. (I’m reminded of the dot.com boom when a start-up called 724 Solutions was, within days of its IPO, worth more than Bank of Montreal. I chose instead Edperbrascan, which was so out of fashion as an ‘old’ company that it yielded 6%. This of course became the best investment of my life, as it is now BAM!)
Thanks!

Q: One of my investing mistakes I’ve made in the past is selling my winners too early. For example, I purchased Shopify at $30 and sold it at about $125. Never in my dreams did I think it would be as high as it is today - the largest company (by market cap) in Canada today. I always thought to myself: “how high could this really go? Isn’t is really expensive!?!”. I still don’t understand why Shopify is valued the way it is, but nevertheless I missed out and I don’t know how often these 30x baggers comes in one’s lifetime.

I now find myself in a similar position with Kinaxis. Thank you to 5i for the recommendation and I am up over 300% on this. I find myself asking similar questions - is it expensive? How high could this stock possibly go? Could it be another Shopify?

I know you like the stock, but is the move in the past few months sustainable? Do you think once the Covid crisis settles down, will the stock price comes down as well? Could this be another 10 bagger (or more)?

On a side note - how often do these 10x (or more) stocks come along in ones investing lifetime?

Thank you for this awesome service. I’ve learned so much for following (and not following) your advice.

Q: In a portfolio where the priorities are capital preservation and some income, these 7 equities represent about 45% of the total value. The other 55% is in sadly low paying GICs. The TOU is a left over from more positive times with a very small weight and kept with a hope for natural gas. The other 6 have weights of about 3% (TD) to 10% (BCE). My question is about how these would hold up if we had a very significant downturn with re-test to recent lows (or lower) with a much more prolonged recovery; do these stocks have some resilience? Are the balance sheets sufficiently secure to see less of an negative impact? Is there sufficient diversification with these holdings? Thanks for your excellent service.

Q: Hi,
TC Energy has already been hurt by Joe Biden’s promise to close Keystone XL. Unfortunately, we have held the stock For 20 years in a DRIP and I fear that the share price is at its greatest peril.
This was such an enormous cost for the company, I think survival becomes an issue , but certainly loss of value for years to come. What is your advice ?
