Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: The other day under the CSU newsfeed and story came out about the subsidiary Harris bulking up. Maybe because of Topicus I am paying more attention but: Is this a way for CSU to indicate a further potential spinout? I was thinking of selling some CSU (for reasons you suggested others were earlier today) but then again (if reasoned true) this seems an extraordinary opportunity to let them engineer further upside for the stock owner. Is this a reasonable position to take?

Q: TFSA: I treat this account as my bank account because I earn no interest in my checking account which typically has fairly high cash balances and I have other investment accounts accounts that generate a ton of dividends as I am basically a "dividend grower" investor. I am retired and earn more than enough to live on. I own these tech. stocks: ETF IGM, ETF ARKK, and NIO ( I guess not a tech stock). I have approx. $35K in my TFSA to invest. I know you like KXS, SHOP & LSPD - I do not see the same returns as has happened this year and they are not value at this point IMHO. ERGO, three or four of your best suggestions going forward - equal weighting please.

Q: Hello and thank you in advance for your reply!
We are hearing more and more talk about a disconnect between the stock market and underlying economies. How sustainable in your view is the current market surge (ie: is this typical of any January), or should we be concerned about another significant correction like last March? If the latter, any recommendations you'd make with regards to less volatile or more defensive sectors, or a more balanced portfolio distribution? With best regards, Aaron

Q: I apologize as I should have asked for some US names in my original question about stocks for my Smith Manoeuvre. 2/3 would be in an unregistered account and 1/3 in a TFSA? Would you be able to please provide 8-9 US names as well in order of your preferred ranking of what to buy first and which ones preferred for TFSA. Thanks again

Q: Do you have any thoughts on this company? Looks like things are finally ramping up and they will be producing gold very shortly (albeit small amounts). I understand it is a very tiny company at present but if the estimates the company is presenting are anywhere near accurate it seems like there is opportunity here? Their extraction tech, if viable, also seems interesting from an ESG slant. Thank you for your thoughts. Happy New Year to the 5i team!

Q: I have listed the companies & etfs in my tfsa plus the %age of each in my portfolio & would like your opinion on whether the group is too passive or aggressive . Should some areas be reduced & would you add some stocks or etfs to give it more diversification? I have pensions, am retired & don't rely on the proceeds for living expenses.
Since I joined 5I ,& more particularly this past year, your advice has been invaluable. For example I just sold DND for a $6600. profit. Your site gave me the idea to buy DND .
Thanks
Dave

Q: Hello 5i,
I would like to transfer "In-Kind" from my RRSP to my TFSA. I have 4 candidates to consider and wonder which order you would rank them in, Best to Worst. I am down in all but one so have added the percentage loss in case that has any significant weighting in the decision.
AW.UN (-14.95%)
EIF (-4.72%)
SIS (+0.32%)
ZDI (-3.12%)
Since all are monthly dividend payers it is more or less immaterial to me which I move.
Also, in this vein, since I am in no rush to accomplish this, should I wait until any kind of pullback in the equity I choose, or just go ahead at whatever price at any time?
Many thanks for your insight.
Cheers,
Mike
