Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Presently the family investments are about 80% Cdn stocks and 20% US stocks....excluding defined benefit pensions.
I would like to increase the US stock portfolio to 30% US stocks, using primarily new cash.

What I'm mulling over, pondering is this - what factors should I consider about taking US stock positions in TFSAs?

One that I'm aware of is that there is no recovery of US taxes withheld on US stocks held in a TFSA.

On the other hand, it seems the overall appreciation of US stocks is better than Cdn stocks, especially in certain sectors.

As the investments in the TFSA are to be held for the long-term, I am inclined to do it....take US stocks positions in the TFSAs.

What say you about doing it?.

Much appreciate your thoughts..........Tom

Q: Peter and His Wonder Team
I realize oil and gas are high risk for numerous reasons. However I am wondering if this trust company may be suitable as a contrarian play. Are they stable in the long run. There dividend is almost 30%...which seems impossible? Even if they cut it in half it would be great. Would it be at least a hold for current owners of the stock? Your assessment and comments would be appreciated. Thank you!

Q: Adyen is described in a recent Forbes article about Baillie Gifford, the Scottish asset managers, as a "Global payments platform. Think Paypal and Square in one." Can you comment on its fundamentals and potential? Thanks!

Q: Do you have any insight on the topic of the real estate holdings of this company? I know they sold an impressive tract of oceanfront property in Greater Vancouver in recent years, and a gas station site next to a Skytrain hub is being converted to a high density apartment project.
I'm unsure if accounting rules still show that real estate is to be carried on the books of a company at the original cost. I'm also wondering what percentage of gas station sites and other land holdings are company-owned or leased by Imperial Oil. Thank you for anything you can offer toward gaining an understanding of these real estate values.

Q: Hello 5i, I am a new DIY dividend investor (switched from mutual funds from various industry advisors). My spouse and I have TFSAs and RRSPs which we have invested in companies traded on the TSX (banks, utilities, etc many of them reference in the portfolios). My question is how do I get USA and international exposure and still stay within the Canadian market; we are not ready for US$ accounts or other international exchanges. I assume the answer is ETFs but I am overwhelmed with the number of choices. Investment timeline is 20+ years and want to focus on dividend growth. Thank you.

Q: Good day and happy Friday 5i team. Please give your opinion on TGED. It seems more weighted to large cap technology which interests me. Concern is small assets under admin. In a registered account, primarily for income and safety, a good call or are there better out there?

Q: I/we have held XEI for some years across 2 TFSA accounts and 2 RRIF accounts (a holdover from a past full service investment service at a major bank). Based on original costs we are down 16.65%. This fund has performed badly this year despite some market recovery. I am considering selling a good part of these positions to purchase individual Canadian dividend paying stocks, growth stocks or other ETFs even though we can't realize any tax losses here. Is taking this loss a good idea? Should we hang on? Ideas and comments please. The good news is that, at the same time, we established positions in XSP and IVV which have done well. We are mid stage retirees with good cash flow and aiming to leave a nice legacy for family.
