Investment Q&A

Q: This year there have been a lot of companies that have made huge gains, and are now trading at very expensive price to earnings or price to sales numbers, particularly in the tech sector. I have several of these myself, but have resisted lightening up at least partially due to not wanting to realize big capital gains this year. Already have big 2020 capital gains from the BYD conversion at the start of this year, which was a taxable event, and I have held BYD for almost 10 years, so had a large embedded gain. I figure there are probably a lot of investors who are feeling the same way with some of their big winners, and I'm wondering about a run of tax GAIN selling in the first week of January, from people who want to lock in some gains, or lighten up outsized positions, delaying capital gains to 2021. Do you think this is a risk, particularly in some of the tech stocks that have doubled, tripled, or more in a very short period of time, and are there any stocks you think might be particularly vulnerable?

Q: There have been a number of questions/comments concerning the recent 3 for 2 stock split of BEPC and BEP.UN and how fractional shares are handled. I reached out to TD Waterhouse and their response may be of interest to your members:

"When we received payment from a Split we as a Broker receive payment on our one bulk position. We do not get paid for each client individually. If the client had a physical certificate or held shares directly with the Transfer Agent in their name only than yes they would have rounded up but the company says for "Registered Holders". The shares in the clients account are registered "TD Waterhouse ITF the client" so when we get paid we get one payment for all our clients because all of our clients shares are registered the same way TD Waterhouse ITF. But the client will get some cash for the fractional shares. The CIL usually comes in about 10 bus days after the Re-Org was processed. "

I would assume the same would be true for all online brokers.

Hope this is helpful
Cheers
Scott

Q: I am investigating solid state batteries as an investment theme. It sounds like the development, production and adoption of this battery technology may be explosive in the years ahead. Are there any under valued US or Cdn companies in the space that you recommend? Also, do you think that like li-ion in the past, investors will latch onto this as a sector to chase in the future?

According to the Globe&Mail Dec 18, 2020 the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project "With full power delayed until September, 2021, the project isn’t generating revenue from ratepayers and payments are coming due."

Both Fortis and Emera will have access to this electricity when it arrives [likely delayed]. How will this affect their businesses? Will they buy electricity and sell it locally and will they transmit to Northeastern US states?

Can or will they charge for transmission through the two undersea cables?

Can we expect this to be a positive event for the two utilities? Is this likely to increase their businesses and income and profit and dividends. I would appreciate your analysis on what to expect for Fortis and Emera
Thank you......... Paul K

Q: I'm considering buying these two ETFs which will be about 5% of my portfolio in total. Is this too much for emerging market exposure or not enough? The mer for each of them is reasonable but one concern I have is that both have BABA & BABA seems to be out of favour with the Chinese gov't. Is that %age a problem? Has this sector already run too far or does it still have room to grow?
Thanks very much for your advice which has been so helpful during my investment journey. To all the team Happy Holidays.

Q: Part 2 of my question about year end adjustments to my portfolio. I have fairly small positions in 10 of these stocks (0.6% to 1.1%), and no position in DOO. I would like to add to several of these using the cash generated from reducing larger positions in some holdings. Looking for best long term total return, 5+ years. Sector, and size of company not a major consideration, in a well diversified portfolio. I like growth, I like dividends. Looking at ATD.B, BAM.A, CAR.UN, DIR.UN, DOO, GRT.UN, ITP, LNF, TCN, TECK.B, SLF. Thank you.

Q: Can you suggest some eft's for the above sectors? Do have a couple tech companies in my portfolio such as Lightspeed and Shopify, but no "big" ones like Google, Apple etc. and WELL and PRN. Would like to find ETF's which may help to broaden my exposure in these sectors.
