Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Wondering what your thoughts are on Chartwell these days. Is it likely to come back after Covid? I own a moderate position in a LIF and wonder if it is a good idea to hold it. It's all bad news about the care homes right now so I hate to sell at the worst time. What are your prospects for this going forward or is there another one I should switch to?

Q: Would you agree that the equity markets have in effect become a synthetic casino where money begets money and the idea that capital flowing to companies to provide the wherewithal for expansion thus job and wealth creation has become secondary?
Last year some 2.7 trillion trades produced roughly 120 trillion dollars of notional equity value. How much of that value ultimately found its way to provide capital to businesses? Less than 5 percent probably.
The brightest minds are helping engineer money for money's sake without creating any lasting value.
Happy Trading Everyone!

Q: I'm looking to reduce my portfolio weighting in Financials and Telecommunications.

The question for both adjustments is the same: for these stocks would you recommend eliminating one entirely or just reducing my holdings in both? I will be adding more exposure in the US industrial and defensive consumer sectors with the freed up cash. I should add that for all of these stocks I'm probably pushing my weighting a bit high, at 5-7%.

For financials: BMO and RY (assuming I would sell BMO over RY)
For telecom: T and BCE (assume I would sell BCE over T)

All of these are held in registered accounts, and I'm still 10+ years out from retirement. I currently hold 24 stocks across my registered accounts.

Q: As of today (Feb 13th 2021), this company has a market cap of ~ $1.5 Billion. However, from what I can see (on SEDAR), it has not even come close to having a positive net income or cash flow since its existence. Am I (as an investor) missing something very obvious, of is this just another sign that there is a "bit of exuberance" in the current market ?
