Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: As a relatively new investor, I am not sure what to do with Unity Software (U). I am currently down 40% since I picked it up leading to its earnings report which was not horrible. Since I am new to investing, can you offer some advice on how to approach this situation. Is it time to cut my losses and put it into something else? Or is this just a matter of picking it up at a bad time just before earnings that did not meet market expectations and now this big sell off in tech? Should i just take a deep breath and give this one the appropriate amount of time (how much time would you suggest?). I am trying to not be an emotional investor with such a loss so your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Q: The CBC has an article today ( https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/instalment-loans-payday-lenders-criticism-1.5936331 ) about the high fees being charged for high risk loans. Reading between the lines, there appears to be some speculation that the government will make changes in the next budget to drop the allowable interest rates being charged. Given this possible development, what is your view about the risk to GSY?

Thank you for your excellent advice and this wonderful service!

Q: Hi Team,
After a record year, my portfolio is getting smashed. (22% down already from peak). Very gut wrenching. I am heavy quality tech names (most on your favourite US list) as I believe long term this is where the most growth is in the world today. Question now is, does a person continue to hold at this point? Sell out? Or try to add? Also, do you believe the 10yr bond yield at 1.5% is really this big of concern for the fundamentals of these tech companies? I find a lot of the quality tech names have very little debt, and when they do need money often raise money using their high share prices instead of borrowing debt anyways. Your thoughts please on the current situation? Thanks
Shane.

Q: This company has come up on a couple of screeners that I have been running and I was wondering if you have any familiarity with it. I was surprised to see an $800 million dollar market cap. It strikes me as a possible candidate for a buyout from a company looking to expand their operations into the regions where SFC operates. In the meantime you would be able to collect a decent dividend. If you could weigh in regarding dividend safety I would appreciate it,
Thanks!

Q: I took a half position in CRWD when it was higher than it is now and am wondering about taking the other half position now that it has fallen quite a bit. Wondering what your thoughts are on this at these levels or if you think averaging in is more appropriate at this time. It will be purchased in a TFSA with a long term hold expectation.

Q: Good morning, I'd like to take advantage of this weakness and buy one full or two half positions in something other than tech or health, Please make a few suggestions for companies that are being pulled down unnecessarily by the dip. US or Cdn are both fine.
Thanks!

Q: There is a lot of nattering now about interest rates rising. When I look at historical charts I see that they are still very low when you take a long term view. Is the concern over done here?
Also wondering what sectors you would favour at this time with a shorter term horizon; i.e. where are we in the rotation?

Thanks

Q: Hello 5i Team
TransAlta (TA) and TransAlta Renewables (RNW) released results March 03.
1 - What are your thoughts on the earnings for both companies?
2 - Which company do you think will provide the best return going forward?
3 - What are your thoughts on purchase price where both companies become interesting?
4 - Why do you think RNW has not raised their dividend for several years, given that they are a "yieldo". Are they receiving a better internal rate of return on drop down projects from TA then the dividend rate?
Thanks
