Q: Hi Peter and Ryan

Understanding that timing the market can be difficult and trying to follow your recommendations for the most part has been very useful information. Thank you
I am looking to “lie low” through what I believe to be a coming correction and wish to invest in ETFs with some protection

I am looking at ZDY ZLU ZLB ZEB as a 20 % of my portfolio over the summer. Your comments please and so you have other etfs that might be of interest... Icahn comes to mind

Q: Hi 5i,
I want to deploy some funds into Financial Services in a registered account for a 3-5 year hold. I know that 5i is bullish on GSY, and I wonder if you would recommend it over BNS for a hold of that length. Today I can buy about 1.85 BNS shares for every GSY share bought, and would thereafter pocket (at present rates) approximately 2.5 times more dividend return from BNS than from GSY for every dollar spent buying in. With the goal being to relatively safely make money over the 3-5 years, and assuming COVID is under control, no other pandemic strikes during the period and only 'normal' market forces prevail, do you see the likely capital appreciation plus dividend of GSY over the period outperforming the likely capital appreciation and higher yield of BNS during that same time? I know that GSY has had a great run over the past year, but now that the world seems to be settling back down I'm having difficulty understanding why I might consider putting money there instead of into something that's many orders of magnitude larger and also less expensive to buy, both in absolute terms and (I think) on most 'price to' metrics .
Thanks for helping me out.

Q: Are you able to offer any insight to the bullish performance over the last 3-days? Trading volume on Friday was 8x average while stock has gone up ~8%.

Their Web Site has May 21st news - "Existing Notes validly tendered in the Exchange Offer may no longer be withdrawn," referencing offer made "to certain eligible noteholders" regarding secured notes.

Not much other news out there, hoping you could shed some light on why the stock has skyrocketed!

Thanks for your great service, Ted.

Q: I have held CJT for a while, in a taxable account. I am down about 13%. In previous Q&A, 5I has leaned towards TFII when discussing these 2. On the other hand, CJT was covered in a 5I article a few weeks back, something like, "Growth on Sale", for stocks that had dropped a lot in the recent rotation but seemed to show potential to recover. And then there is CJT's deal with Amazon which also seems to be a good positive. So, although you have answered before, which of the 2 would you currently invest in. The tax loss offers some solace and benefit for a switch, but then there is a possible recovery??? Thanks for your excellent service.

Q: In the past you have mentioned you felt the dividend is vulnerable, wondering if anything has changed or do you still feel this way? Could you list a few Canadian REITS you would feel more comfortable with yielding above 5%?

Thanks

Q: Good morning,

Two general questions:

1. I am fortunate in that I have now maxed out my TFSA contribution. Could you give me an idea of what sort of investments I should have in a TFSA vs. a cash account?

2. According to portfolio analytics I am underweight in Fixed Equity. Underweight, in that I have none. Could you give some direction as to what to include for the fixed equity portion of a portfolio and provide some suggestions.

Thank you for your help!

Q: From 1985 to 2020, David Swensen headed a team which  grew the Yale endowment from $1 billion to $31.2 billion.

What is this growth a result of astute investing or of fundraising or of both investing and fundraising?

On March 18, 2021 "Using safety and valuation as the primary metrics", you ranked these 4 utilities : We would rank: FTS, NPI, AQN, EMA.

You consistently rank EMA at the bottom of the list yet since 2008 the graphs of FTS and EMA are almost exactly the same, both raise their dividends annually and EMA has a higher dividend [4.5% as opposed to 3.7%].

You must see something I am missing. What is the problem with EMA making it so much less desirable than FTS. Please be specific if you can, as this problem has bothered me for a long time. I own 4%EMA and 5%FTS positions in the two and need to add a bit to one. I plan to own these "forever" strictly for income and enough growth to offset inflation.
Thanh you.......... Paul K.

Q: Currently own CNR and am concerned about the KCS merger. Do you think the share price can recover IF the merger is approved? What if its not approved? Some major share holders think that CNR is taking a large risk and are over-paying/ My understanding is this decision could take up to a year to be decided. Would you SELL CNR and move to CP while this sorts out (no impact tax wise) or continue to HOLD until things get a little clearer to shareholders.
Thanks for your thoughts
