Investment Q&A

Q: I paid a lot more attention to my investment approach this year, and obviously used your service to make a lot of my decisions, slowing trying to align with the recommendations of your portfolio analysis. I currently hold 25 different stocks.

Looking back at 2021 my overall investment return was 21.41%, slightly lower than the TSX Composite Index of return of 21.74%.

I'm not unhappy with that return, obviously, but I'm wondering given my level of success if I should be simplifying my life and just moving to a few ETFs to cover appropriate geography/industries and forget about it.

This is probably a hard question for you to answer but you might have some insight.

Q: For my unregistered account I am looking for your top 5 dividend stocks in Canada and 5 top US dividend stocks if purchased today. Understand that US stocks will be subject to withholding but expect the growth to compensate. Thank you and Happy New Year.

Q: Hello, recently Eric Nuttal called PXT a value trap and a chronic underperformer, and he previously owned the company. He also stated that mgmt is giving mixed messaging and needs to increase the div, do a special div, and increase buybacks. On paper I thought PXT was doing everything right. The amount of shares they have bought back and just confirmed again for 2022 is amazing. Yet year after year it doesn't get the valuation increase it deserves. As Eric says "the market does not care about PXT and there are no big buyers", despite of it having the best balance sheet and buybacks in Canadian o&g. Yes its up last year, but considerably lower than its peers, so there is the opportunity cost. My question is, do we often see companies buying back shares, great balance sheet, and doing most things right yet they never receive the valuation they should or is it a case of you need to be patient, maybe even for years to see the market eventually reward it.

Q: How do you see the airline industry objections to the rollout of 5G by companies like Verizon affecting VZ's stock? Also, how is it possible to invest what sounds like so far billions to just now get to this potential non-starter? Why wasn't this 5g conflict with aircraft uncovered by the telcos in early days? Thank you.

Q: Here are two telecom companies...one French and the other Russian. I have herd several experts say that telecoms are not good investments because they always have to reinvest all there free cash and profits in upgrading there equipment and technologies. So is there any advantages in owning them in the next year or two besides the dividend? Would they hold up during a recession? Thanks for your insight which is always helpful.

Q: Considering the purchase of one of these two companies.
Both have had a nice pullback recently and Oracle has made a big purchase. Could you give me your opinion of both (plus and minus) and which would be your favourite for a 4 to 5 year hold.
A happy new year to all and a healthy and a prosperous year.
