Investment Q&A

Not investment advice or solicitation to buy/sell securities. Do your own due diligence and/or consult an advisor.

Q: Hi. I have several stocks in my RIFF and TFSA which pay dividends in American dollars although I have purchased them in Canadian dollars. (eg, BAM.A; Open Text etc.) The dividend payout is then converted to Canadian dollars. I like to use the DRIP feature when possible. In order to do so with funds that pay out in USD, I would have to move the securities to my USD. Is this a good idea or are there disadvantages to do so? The securities are long term holds in my portfolio. Thanks for your help.

Q: I have only CNQ in energy. I am wondering about adding one more holding as I read the answers to other members - that energy would be a good place to hide in the event that Russia does move ahead, and that there is some room for growth left in the sector. I'm particularly interested in adding a second holding for growth, and am not very concerned about risk. Please suggest a company for a second holding. Thanks!

Q: I own both BMY and GILD, both of which have not done much the past few years except provide a stable dividend. I have enough health and death care ( - PLC:) ) stocks currently and would be OK to sell or raise some cash.
Do you think one or both of these have an upgraded outlook and are worth holding for the next year or two?
Thank you for the great service.

Q: In one of your answer of yesterday, you said: Right now, growth companies, relative to large companies, are the cheapest they have been in nearly 30 years.

Can you talk more about this fact and give examples please.

Thank you :)
