Q: Why do some companies issue general statements prior to the release of their quarterly reports? EGLX and SIS, among others, have recently done this. I can understand if there is something material (usually negative) that is happening people should know but I get suspicious when it is just to announce good news on what is a usually lagging stock price. The negative side I see to this is that if they announce good news when their stocks are down if next time they don't make a special announcement (and the stock is still down) then should we infer a bad new quarterly report is coming?

Appreciate your insight.

Q: Hi!

I'm looking to establish a U.S. portfolio and I've identified these 5 stocks as a good base. I have plenty of exposure to financials and energy in my CDN portfolio. Do you think these stocks are a good starting point? Would you replace any?

Thanks,
Jason

Q: I expected a blood bath this am with CPI at 7.5% and 10 year hitting 2%. The reaction is surprisingly mild. Even ARKK is up! Your thoughts please.
In spite of your 'do nothing headline' I checked out in January. Thinking of averaging back in or waiting for the Fed in March. What would you suggest?
Thanks Peter.

Q: About 5% of my portfolio is comprised of SLF and MFC, of which SLF is about 2/3s today. Another 10% of my portfolio is Cdn Banks.
After today's movement, what would you think of selling MFC and consolidating into SLF?
Also, given the inflation sirens, what would be a reasonable amount of bank holdings and insurance co holdings?

Thank You

Q: I held a smallish position in Canada Goose, and was getting less optimistic about sales growth, particularly in China, and sold half early in 2021 at about $53. Obviously should have sold all of it.
Today's results were disappointing with regard to the outlook.

(1)Wondering what you think of the GOOS results.

(2) If I sell the remaining GOOS shares, I would add to an existing smallish position in one of Pollard Banknote, Park Lawn or Trisura. How would you rank these 4 companies, GOOS, PBL, PLC, TSU, as part of a balanced portfolio with a tolerance for risk?

Q: Hi...Bill Harris on BNN today said that Avenue is no longer in Leon's. They had bought, believing in the pandemic impact that would cause people to stay home and buy a TV & sofa. Now, with the potential reopening post-Covid, people may soon prefer to go out to a baseball game and have a beer & hotdog (I'm paraphrasing). The result = Leon's may feel the impact. I am a happy owner of LNF...just curious on your thoughts?

Thanks....Steve
