Q: What would be your top picks for dividend stocks that are trading currently at good discounts and have a great recovery potential-across all segments US and Canada? One group making 3.5% or higher; one group 2-3% but have more growth opportunity? Thanks.

Q: Apparently the US military and govt are looking to invest some funds towards funding projects in Canada for rare minerals, in an effort to reduce the dependency on China for critical minerals.
Can you suggest any Canadian companies or an ETF that may benefit from this.

Q: I have the same company in a RIF account and in a Margin Account. If I sell shares in the Margin Account for Tax Loss or Capital Gain, do I need to take the Cost Base from the RIF Account and the Margin Account together. My opinion is, that whatever is in the RIF Account does not influence the Cost Base in the Margin Account. What is correct?
Thank you!
Albert

Q: I just sold off my Biogen holding and am looking for a replacement within the healthcare sector. I held Biogen for over 3 years and exited with a nice return, but I have to say that I did not enjoy the wild ride and price swings as it seemed to trade solely on its new Alzheimer’s drug advancements and setbacks. So now I am looking to replace it with something a little more stable but still with the expectation of slow and steady growth. What would be your top 1 or 2 picks be today for both the US and Canada that might fit. I already own Savaria and XLV so something besides these.

Q: Would you expect Trisura to initiate a dividend at some point? The three closest peers that you note in your January research report all pay a small dividend. Also, do you have an opinion on how long it will be before there is a clear sign that their expansion into the U.S. is succeeding? It seems to me the landscape is littered with companies who failed to crack the competitive U.S. market.

Thanks,

Q: In your last blog, there was an interesting article about “Yield is for Farmers.” The gist of it was that farmers can increase the yield from their acreage and get more crops grown from their land, but that yield is a misleading concept for stocks. In stocks, a higher yield does not give you any extra return. All it does is return more of your own investment in a company. Once the cash dividend is paid to you, the economic value of the company you own drops the same amount. I notice this all the time with BCE, FTS and other well-known dividend payers. The author says bond yields are the only true yields as you get the income paid on top of your original investment.

What do you think of his position that yield is not a relevant concept for stocks?

Thanks
Dave
